Got to bag on Mike Brady for a minute

What was this guy's deal? I have no issues with Robert Reed the actor who portrayed him, but Mike Brady the character was... well... he was a real jerk!

Alice and her smart mouth would drive anyone up the wall. I'm surprised she didn't regularly catch a backhand to the teeth from every person in the house.

Word is that Robert Reed was a bit of a dick.

“Too big for the role”
Always fighting with the director, writers, etc..
Didn’t spend any time off camera with the other cast members.

Maybe all that came through in the character.

Architecture is indeed a stressful job. Some architects spend more time trying to get their ideas approved than they do actually designing anything. The firms go bankrupt all the time. And he had to support nine people on one salary! He was lucky to have a great wife.

Carol deserves credit, too. Even with a full-time housekeeper/cool taking care of six kids must have been brutal. Juggling school stuff, doctor visits, sports, music lessons, etc. would have been brutal. Especially in the days before bulk buying frozen foods—that poor woman must have been to the grocery store seven days a week so Alice would have food to cook.

Cut the guy a break. An architect in 1969 only made about $13,600 a year, which is the equivalent of $112,000 in today's money. He had a big house payment, 2 car payments, a live-in housekeeper's salary to pay, 6 children, a wife, a dog, and a perm to support, not to mention all those vacations. Dude had to be broke.

I am at the gym and some morning talk/news show is on TV. The Brady house has been landmarked. It will be preserved as an American icon until the boomers and their kids are all dead and nobody gives a shit about old sitcoms anymore.
