Dig it! Going by Amtrak from WI to San Jose

Tonight we embark on the Empire Builder at Columbus, WI to Portland, OR where we will board the Coast Starliner to San Jose, CA. That will involve three nights on the train in a "bedroom" sleeper. It's a princely sum we're spending to do this, but it's something I've wanted to do all my life. The really sad part is that tomorrow we'll wake up tomorrow morning in North Dakota, travel through the flat, ugly part of Montana during the day and then hit Glacier NP in the dark. That sucks. I don't know if I'll have web access for much of the journey but will plan to post some photos at least when we're in Cali.

I've done some of those lines. Did the sleeper car once (to Glacier). It's a neat experience.

I've taken the train from Pittsburgh to Chicago a few times. Did a sleeper room of some sort once but won't do that again -- it wasn't a proper sleeper, so I hope your experience is different. A few years ago, we took the train from Oakland down to LA and it was great. Beautiful scenery for most of the time. I love the train.
