Gigging guitarists question, certificate of insurance for band?

Yes, that's Oolong. :)
Question for the gigging players out there. My band is slated to play my company's corporate holiday party (about 500 people at a hotel ballroom) and the hotel is asking about the certificate of insurance for the band.

I've been playing for decades in various venues, large/small and everything in between and I've never heard of this. Is insurance usually that is usually handled by the venue or maybe the company having the event?

Sorry it's a bit obscure! This is the guitar forum so here's a pic of my PRS on a cool guitar hanger that is on my amp!

Our bassist is a lawyer, he got a two day policy for $64 online.

Apparently it's a thing, a friend of mine who was a DJ and plays in bands has had to deal with it.

I had to get a limited liability and file a DBA for DJing and band in certain venues like Casinos. (Venue wants to cover their asses in case you hit a patron with your tele or a PA speaker falls onto someone. ) The good part is, much of that can be written off on taxes against the 1099s that those venues will send you on any gigs over $600.

Once I invested in my son-in-law’s sound and lighting company, it worked out better because more gear, installs, and rentals means a couple million worth of liability and replacement insurance in case some drunk ass damages something at a gig. :baimun:

Usually, I think the venues cover it. In all my years, I've never had to provide it.

Here in the UK, most pubs/bars aren't going to ask for anything but the further up the food chain the venue is, or more corporate the people hiring you, the more likely you are to need public liability insurance to be allowed to play.

Edit: And that PRS/Splawn rig is hot!

Thanks, and thanks!
