Gig report - King of Tone vs. D and M Drive

So I played my two regular bar gigs back to back this weekend. Blue Beet in Newport Beach on Friday and The Post in Villa Park.

After trying to get some different sounds from the KoT Friday night using the distortion side more I figured it would be interesting to play the same music the next night with the D and M Drive in its place. I also brought my Sunface fuzz since neither has been to a gig yet. The Sunface is killer but does not fit the needs of the gig (or the rest of my rig) so it didn't get used much - the Wampler Velvet Fuzz is the better tool in this situation. It goes back into my small board for use with my single coil guitars and more reasonable volume management gigs.

I really like the boost side of the KoT but the distortion doesn't quite have enough "oomf" for my rock gigs. I've been using the Voodoo Lab Sparkledrive MOD for years for my "cranked Marshal" sound and even though it doesn't have as much gain it works really well with my amp as a general overdrive. Every time I try something that is more distortion it tends to get lost in the mix with this band.

The D and M drive has a good sounding boost that I can work with but the "drive" or crunch side works much better for the 80's and 90's heavy stuff like Blink 182 or even "Pour Some Sugar on Me". It would be nice if it had a mid control I think but it seems to work pretty good regardless in that setting. It is also tempting to ditch my Velvet fuzz, use a TRS cable with the D and M and give each side it's own loop on the ES-8. I think I could probably stack the sides and get something similar to the Velvet fuzz but then also have more options for other sounds as well. Right now I'm using the KoT and the D and M into one loop and switching sides manually which has led to a few mistakes since the right side of the pedal is so close to the edge of the ES-8 on my board.

Stuff to think about. My small board will probably have both Analogman pedals on it which will work pretty good.

I’ve been eyeing the D&M drive recently. I kinda like the idea of having the 2in1 pedal.
 
I owned a KOT and with all the buzz it had generated I was underwhelmed. This was years ago though. I ended up with a Keeley TS9 flexi. I know, I know...I'm not keeping up...
It’s a good pedal but even analog mike will tell you it’s not the “end all be all”. It’s definitely not worth $500. Just another tool for the toolbox. The D and M seems to be the best tool for the rock band. And as far as guitars go, I got a whole dissertation from our drummer/boss Saturday night after the gig how the McFeely 454 is really the best guitar for that band in terms of stage mix and tones. The rest of my guitars (including the PRS) are “nice” but none “do the job like your McFeely”.

Agreed..its all about the mix in the band.

Hmm... would be a shame if something happened to it!! :eek::grin:
