Did anyone else hate Wicked?

My daughter insisted that I go see Wicked today. I don’t especially like musicals, but Ariana Grande has a great voice, so I thought it would be okay. It was horrible. The sound mix was done in HELL. Every single sound was shrill. Every voice, every instrument, every footstep, it all hurt my ears. And they wouldn’t stop the godawful singing. And the songs were so long. They could have cut half an hour of that shit out, saved tens of millions of dollars, and sold just as many tickets. But apparently I’m the only one who hates it because everyone else in the developed world loves it. Did anyone else hate it?

I really liked, but can confirm that there were some harsh sounds moments. I have really sensitive ears (not in a musical way, they're just blown out and tender), so I'm never sure if it's me or the mix.

I have not seen it, yet. There's certainly a chance I'll hate it when I do see it. Maybe, as a silver lining, I'll enjoy the porn website on the doll packaging.

As a theatre person who’s always loathed 99% of Broadway musicals…

That shit is shit, and the same shit is even shittier.

As such, I did not pay a ticket to endorse that shit.

I'm waiting for Christmas day to catch this flick. I'm practicing too!

I saw the play on Broadway and enjoyed it quite a bit. That was around 2015 or so and I've forgotten all except the overall gist of the story. I'm interested in seeing it but will wait for the theater.

Maybe it was the theater's sound system? There was one in Connecticut I used to go to that always played the movies way too fucking loud, so much so that I stopped going there. That one may be more on the theater than the sound editors... but maybe not!]

As for them singing everything... well, yeah...

I was regretting being guilted into going to the movie in the opening minutes when there were three songs before the opening credits... and then that title card read "Wicked... Part 1"

I said "Are you fucking kidding me?..." and my wife said "You don't have to go see part two" which calmed me down for a while. (Not for the entire thing as we were in that theatre for THREE GODDAMNED HOURS...) :annoyed:

This movie can be credited for helping me understand why I fucking loathe musicals though. The performers are of exceptional talent, the sets were expansive and beautiful, the cinematography is stunning, and even the story is interesting and compelling. But every few minutes when the story is getting good... they fucking break into song and I want to rip my goddamned ears off.

It dawned on me that because I hear all of the layers of instruments and the melodic layers of vocals first... trying to decipher the dialogue out of the singing is a frustrating chore akin to trying to read the subtitles on a foreign spy thriller while watching the dark screen for clues.

So ultimately, that's on me. If people are loving Wicked... more power to them, I'm not going to piss in their cornflakes. Just don't take me along because the next mother fucker who makes jazz hands and yells "Yeah!..." Is gonna get a size 12 shoe in their face. :helper:

I want to go to one of these but just shout Rocky Horror Picture Show AP lines at the screen. I don't think calling the two leads "asshole!" and "slut!" would be appreciated by the other moviegoers though :embarrassed:

If you lived near me, we could both dress up as Rocky Horror characters... go to the Wicked sing along... and break into Rock Horror songs at all the wrong times!!! :lmbo:

Not on my "to see" list, but as I said in the other Wicked thread, I was dragged to the Broadway version several years ago, so I've done my time.

On a side note, what's up with Arianna Grande? She's looking a bit anorexic in that photo. Does she need a sandwich or is that just a bad photo?

I did not see it. I have watched musicals and enjoyed them but also encountered the let’s get the hell out of here type too. Also, I prefer my good witches to be more, shall we say, big boned.

Wife really wanted to see it so we went a week or so ago and I'd say it's ok. I know it's a musical but as a film adaptation, there were definitely parts that would have benefited from a bit more dialogue rather than constantly breaking into song. I can understand the shrill comment as well.

My wife's exact quote was "I go to all those super hero movies with you" and I could not dispute this logic. :helper:

We don't talk about other people's bodies. Your concern has been voiced by other people in the media. Their input, too, was unsolicited.
So, we are supposed to keep silent until after the person dies of anorexia. That's good to know because I'd hate to be impolite to someone who's starving themselves to death. My natural tendency is to blurt out something crude like, "Eat some cake you fuckin' twig!"

Not an expert, but eating disorders are often manifestations of a need to exert control on an otherwise chaotic life. Having old men on a guitar forum policing your appearance doesn't seem to be a positive thing to add to the mix. I assume that she, of all people, has access to proper medical care and nutritional advice, as well as psychiatric care should that be necessary.
