Denis Villeneuve's Dune

I saw the movie released in the 80s before I read the book, and I was so confused. It all made more sense after I read the book. I don't think this story translates well to the screen.

And based on what happened with Blade Runner 2049, which is an excellent science fiction movie, I predict this one will be a flop now matter how good it is. The story is too high brow for modern audiences.

Was that the 2nd Blade Runner? That was almost as boring as Jodie Foster's Contact. I had trouble keeping awake.

I watched Sting's Dune in the theatre. :ack:

Me too.

It's obviously a (very) flawed film, but I still like it.

Big segue: but do you remember The Bible TV series that came out about a decade ago? Their version of King Herod was totally riffing on Baron Harkonnen from Lynch's Dune.

Yeah, and you just made my point. Modern audiences don't care for science fiction that isn't packed with a lot of action. Dune is that kind of story, it has a lot of slow moments and deep dialog.

Been a fan since I read the books in high school.
The Lynch movie screwed with the story too much but was still cool as fk.
I don't go to movies, but I cant bring myself to miss this one.

have very high hopes, maybe it will make up for the non-existence of the Jodorowsky attempt

(also stoked by the noted similarities of some of the trailer images and dopesmoker)

I loved the Sci-fi channel miniseries. It makes a lot more sense than the Lynch movie, probably because it’s over four and a half hours long. So I’m excited for this one because the studio decided to make it a series. And of course I want to see the Shai-Hulud on a huge Imax screen. The trailer got me jazzed up enough that I finally started reading the book. It’s an audiobook with actors handling the dialogue so that’s getting me through the first half of the book which is supposedly where most people get bored and quit.

That series was somewhat more true to the original than Lynch was. I hated what they did to the Fremen though, making them look like a bunch of starving refugees.

Both that series and Lynch completely missed the point of the Fremen - that they were the ultimate bad-ass warriors, because that was the only way they could survive on their hell-planet.

I never saw the mini series. Read the books up thru about #4. The Lynch move was good on the eyes but screwed the pooch on a lot critical details and narrative elements.
I'l def check this one out. The trailer look good visually, and a series may be more appropriate to stay true to the novels.
We'll see.

So cool. Especially as Sleep are Dune fans, as we can see in the lyrics of 'Giza Butler':

The Kiefsatz Hasherach now takes the Bong Jabbar
Rifftual commences 'round the tree stump altar
Bong Water of Life anoints the Muad' Doob messiah

:jam:

Bong Jabbar-stop at one hit you die. 2 and you get pantry/refrigerator prescience. 3 and you turn into a guilded navigator of the spacetimes.
