Achtung! DARK SMURFCO: Have you ever, in your life, experienced true horror? Like felt the emotion of terror or horror beyond just feeling scared or frightened

of course don't answer if it is too painful but like i was watching TV the other day and there was a scene where someone walked out into the street and got hit by a car. and i sort of imagined myself in that position of watching that happen to someone i cared about (or to anyone really i guess) and how horrifying that would be in real life. and that got me to thinking. i don't think i have truly ever felt terror or horror before. like if you're in a car and you think you're about to go off a cliff or something or you're stuck on a train track or whatever, i mean you get the idea...

so have you ever experienced true horror? if yes and you feel comfortable sharing, what caused it? genuinely curious to try and learn what it's like.

actually i think the closest i have ever come was a few years ago when i smoked some REALLY potent weed and had an awful paranoia / existential crisis type thing happen. but I don't know that drug-induced things like that really count. I'm talking naturally occurring horror.

The only thing that really stands out is this weird Fortean thing that happened back in the early 1980s when I was a young 20 something. Me and my picking buddy Dan were chilling one evening in his driveway burning one, when another old high school bud Stanley stopped by in his old pickup with his two coon dogs in the back. He said let's go down to the creek bank and listen to the dogs run and have a beer. So we grabbed a six pack and went down a little field road into the swampy woods by the creek about a mile from any house, turned the dogs loose, sat on the tailgate, and cracked a beer. The dogs took off and we could hear them running thru the woods trying to pick up a scent like coon dogs do.
We sat there shooting the sht for perhaps 30 min when we heard this strange low frequency grunting/thumping sound way off in the distance, seemingly several hundred yards away. Closest I can describe it was like the sound of someone trying to pull start a lwawn mower or kick start a motorcycle. We commented that's odd not sure what that might be....
Not a min or two later we heard the same sound but LOUD and CLOSE, like right there in the bushes beside the truck! There was no sound of anything approaching, just a far off sound and then almost instantly the same sound coming outta the bushes right beside us! At the same time the 2 dogs suddenly appeared outta nowhere and jumped in the back of the truck! We didn't say a word to each other, we just instantly jumped in the truck and hauled ass outta there!
When we got back to the main road and caught our breath we laughed at ourselves for panicking, and went on back home.
Here's the even odder thing. Me and Dan didn't talk about the experience for a year or two. It's like we blocked it out of our memory. Then one day it just came to me and I asked Dan if he remembered it. He said, "yea I guess, kinda, but I thought I dreamed that". I was adamant that no, we both didn't dream it, it actually happened. So we went and looked up Stanley the coon dog guy and asked him about it. He was adamant that we were crazy and it never happened. He still denies remembering anything about it to this day.
WTH was it? I have no fking clue. Ive been in the woods all my life and never experienced another sound like that. Ive often thought about going back there and camping for a cheap thrill but the place is no long accessible by land due to development, and getting there by canoe would require extensive bush hacking thru tree falls. So it remains my one mysterious "horror in the woods".

When I was about 9 I woke up in the middle of the night after we got a new stove with an automatic flint ignition instead of pilot light. I lay there awake and heard the clicking of that flint from downstairs, the door was open and from my door I was able to see down the staircase into the kitchen area, I looked and saw no light on down there so I thought it was strange. Right then and there I heard the clicking coming from directly beside my bed, I looked over and there was a shadow figure with crazy Medusa like hair right there and I saw it leaning towards me and the air seemed to be "buzzing". I grabbed my covers and tented up in there until proper morning came. You better believe I knew true horror. For the next week or two I was terrified of going to sleep as well.

Hyperactive imagination of a kid or so maybe, but that shit was no Bueno.

Probably the weirdest situation I ever experienced was when I bullied into inhaling something likely laced with PCP or something else not good.

An unexpected 12 hour dissociative episode is no one’s idea of a good time, I’d wager. Wasn’t really horrified/terrified but it was a bad scene and I still have a sense of unreality around the episode and when I’m back in the place where it happened I’m still a little unclear on what exactly was real

If we are talking drug induced horror, I recall an incident when I was in high school around 1974 I had just turned 17 and had gotten my first old cheap $500 car. It was a pleasant Sunday in early summer. I had a hit of this orange blotter, took it and met some friends and spent the day at the local rock quarry swimming hole. All was lovely until the day was over and we all split, and the blotter only got more intense. I went and hung out at a friends house until it got to be about midnight and I had to go home, and the trip just continued to intensify. I dodged lasers all the way home. I snuck in the house, went back to the den, turned on the TV and started watching whatever old movies were on, meanwhile just tripping harder and harder. I remember being totally entranced by this old Tony Curtis circus movie. I went and looked in the mirror about 3 am and a skeleton was staring back at me. Im thinking this aint good, have I permanently fried my brain? lol. It finally started wearing off after about 18 hrs, around 7 am. Mom woke up and found me zoned out watching Captain Kangaroo. Im sure she wondered WTH was going on.

I think terror and horror are very different things. I've felt horror when a toilet overflowed while I was wearing sandals. Terror is harder. Maybe when a student with no history of seizures goes into a seizure.

I had quite a bit of experience with hallucinogens, mostly shrooms, but some acid too, back in my younger days. It was overall 99% positive, but I had one other bad trip my first yr in college. I dropped some supposedly mild acid. I didn't even trip at all.......
it just put me in a state of total anxiety and panic for like 2-3 weeks, super weird. It was so bad I quit going to class, dropped out and went home, and worked construction for a yr before I went back.
That was some nasty stuff whatever it was.

If we’re not counting drug related stories. I had a gig in New Orleans that a buddy of mine tagged along for. As part of the gig, I was given a place to stay. Went there before the gig and dropped everything off. After the gig something was very off about that place. I thought I was just being weird but when I looked at my buddy, he looked terrified. Didn’t stick around to find out what was up. We grabbed our shit and left.

That was me.
I had the dry heaves.

I guess the time I did a 540 degree spin on a major highway and ended up on the shoulder facing traffic.
I settled into place on the right shoulder just as a semi rolled by in the right lane.
Watching that come at me was pretty terrifying.

For about 10 seconds.

I did a three point turn on the shoulder and got back into traffic and continued to work.

Yea there's been a couple wrecks and a few near misses but those things usually happen so fast you don't have time to be scared till its over.
But there was this one time going down Interstate and ahead of me an entire wheel spun off a semi and came bouncing down the road straight at me and bounced over the top of my car and missed me. That was a scary couple of seconds. Another time I was driving down the Interstate and a fighter jet from the nearby AF base flew over me from behind so low I could count the rivets. I about shit my pants.

Sleep paralysis twice.
I had that every couple of weeks for a while. It was bad and would wreck you for a few days after. I ended up reading that could be used to do astral projection which I didn’t really believe could happen. The next time it happened after that I was ready to go fly around and shit and woke up. Never happened again.

I installed carpet once in a house close to I57, after construction company redid the wall with the big hole in it from a wheel from a semi.

I imagine that would be more terrifying because you can see it coming for far too long of a time and there’s not really anything you can do about it.
