Kick Henry Jackassowski
The Stray Cats played in Denver last night. It was the first show I’ve seen at the Mission Ballroom, a slightly less than 4,000 person venue that gave the feeling of an intimate show but the crowd could still get loud. The band was awesome. Their energy was abundant; if you had told me that they were 25 instead of 65 I would have believed you. Setzer’s tone was incredible. I’ve seen him before and he sounded good but not like this. His Bassman amps were sparkling like diamongs. Those great songs they wrote in the eighties don’t use the high end of Setzer’s vocal range so he was able to sing everything on key. Slim Jim Phantom managed to play the drums standing the entire time which I find impressive on the rare occasion that I get to see a drummer do it. Lee Rocker kept swapping out basses and I’m not sure why, they all sounded the same, but I did see his tech tuning them up every time he switched so maybe he just likes to be dead on. Anyway, as an eighties kid who never got to see the Cats decades ago it was great to finally cross this one off my bucket list.
