(The original, factory-installed 429 Super Cobra Jet. Rated at 375 hp, this was arguably one of the most powerful engines to find its way into the Mustang engine bay.)

Ed Meyer gets absolutely giddy over assembly-line details found on untouched, low-mileage Ford Mustangs. While Meyer is known for his Boss 429 and Shelby restorations, his knowledge and experience with factory assembly-line procedures and parts also makes him the go-to guy for detailing survivor Mustangs, many of which have spent years, even decades, in hiding.

This Grabber Lime 1971 Mustang convertible is a perfect example of what excites Meyer. One of only seven produced that year with the J-code 429 Super Cobra Jet engine, and one of just five J-codes mated with a four-speed, the super-rare, heavily optioned convertible was owned for more than four decades by Ohio collector Dick Serdinak. He purchased the Mustang from its original owner in the mid 1970s, adding it to his eclectic Ford collection.

The convertible from this year not a favorite. That color not a favorite either. The white and black stripe model of that year, fast back with louvered back glass and spoiler was it. That with some big meats, hi-jackers and traction bars ruled.

I like the previous generation better, but it is hard to not like this one as well, especially with the 429 SCJ and a stick.

they definitely weren't doing themselves any favors with that grille/headlights setup. but from the side it looks fine to me, esp for a rag top.

and as someone who has OWNED the 429 SCJ, the "375 hp" bullshit is silly. esp when you discover that they all came with a rev limiter wired to the coil and then REMOVED said rev limiter and the rpm's suddenly go to 7000+, instead of 5400......well....add another 200 hp to that number.
i saw one dyno'd on an engine stand at just over 600 hp at the flywheel.
