Can I get some feedback on a proposed class offering?

OK....I just posted this on CL to get the ball rolling...

Premier Music is offering a new workshop for musicians who are looking to start performing in a working cover band. Students will learn the standard repertoire and skills set to perform in a working cover band. Each 4 month session will cover 10-12 of the most common "standard" songs that bands are supposed to know to work in bars, private parties and other paying gigs. There are 4 different sessions each with a different set of songs so by the end of the course students will have a full nights worth of 40-60 songs in their songbook ready to perform!

Other skills taught include basic sound reinforcement and stage volume management, booking gigs, vocal training for non-singers, effective rehearsal techniques and much more. Each class will have the opportunity to play at least one gig in a bar or restaurant in the area.

Contact Mark Wein at Premier Music for more information! (714)744-8100 or visit our website http://www.premierschoolofmusic.com/

that's sooo going to get flagged by your competition. "what? he's teaching people how to get gigs?! fuck that guy!"

Cover Band Skills and Repertoire Workshop

In this class students will learn the standard repertoire and skills set to perform in a working cover band. Music taught in this class will include the 20 “standard” bar band songs that are expected repertoire in any bar/private party band for hire situation.

Yes, yes, yes, and yes. There are so many bands that could benefit greatly from just an hour workshop on this. #1 rule, you're on stage, you don't have any fucking clue how it sounds out on the floor, stop turning your fucking amp up one notch every time between songs.

And the vocal training for non-singers it a great idea too, teach some simple harmonies to popular tunes. The Joker has some good ones in the chorus, I noticed that on your list. That's one of those small things that add a lot to a song and shouldn't take a lot of time to teach.

I think this is a great idea.

Wouldn't be the first time :embarrassed:

These are all ideas I try to get across in all of our classes but they would be core concepts in not only getting gigs but keeping them :embarrassed:

Love the class idea; wish I were in Southern California. Those two things are independent of each other.

I am only mildly surprised you have no U2 or Rolling Stones in your 20 song list, but I am greatly surprised people want to listen to Jesse's Girl or 8675309.

I agree with this. You pretty much Need Satisfaction or Gimme Shelter.

I'm not surprised... People really like dumb music..

actually there is a bunch of stones tunes that we play....I just pulled that list off the top of my head...I was going to sit down with our current song list and make a "real" selection of music at work today...

I suppose it goes with the crowd. I remember playing in a bar one time and we were asked to do more than we'd prepared to do...we suggested a Creedence song ("Fortunate Son") and he said, OK, but don't do anything like Johnny B Goode or the people will think they're up at the American Legion bar.

It also explains why the fuck Bon Jovi and Neil Diamond songs are heard in stadiums across the US during sports events.

If I told you I'd have to kill you.

:embarrassed:

Actually I was going to go through my song list and pull the 20 or so songs that I end up having to play at EVERY gig. Off the top of my head:

Sweet Home Alabama
The Joker
Brown Eyed Girl
Jessies Girl
867-5309 (Jenny Jenny)
Summer of 69
You Shook Me All Night Long
Hard to Handle
Don't Stop Believing - or other Journey song
Just What I Needed
What I Got
Blister in the Sun
Some blues song.
Mustang Sally
the 3 chord I IV V songs that are totally interchangeable song list
Play that Funky Music

The usual stuff..some songs have worked for 10 years or so and some of it is regional, I'm sure....

That right there is an excelletn example of why I don't want to play covers, even if I make money. :embarrassed:

Ooh, another one you need is some Cheap Trick. I suggest the incredbly overplayed but nonetheless brilliant "Surrender".

Yea, me too, that is why I became an electrician, so that I could do something far more fun than play Jessie's Girl, like crawl under houses and in attics...

Hot August Night is a playoff-caliber album.

Also this class sounds cool, you should offer it on the onlines so I can take it and become rich playing frat parties.

We do Surrender and Want you to Want me...I'd probably do "Want you" for the class since it's a bit more universal around here.

Neil Diamond rules.

We do Sweet Caroline :embarrassed:

I enjoy playing music for people who are having fun, and even the songs I've played a million times can be fun if the audience is into it....I really don't mind playing cover gigs and things like "Mustang Sally" really one get pulled out at weddings and stuff.
