Can I get some feedback on a proposed class offering?

Cover Band Skills and Repertoire Workshop

In this class students will learn the standard repertoire and skills set to perform in a working cover band. Music taught in this class will include the 20 “standard” bar band songs that are expected repertoire in any bar/private party band for hire situation.
Other skills taught include basic sound reinforcement and stage volume management, booking gigs, vocal training for non-singers, effective rehearsal techniques and much more. Each class will have the opportunity to play at least one gig in a bar or restaurant in the area!

EEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE (<- feedback)

sounds like a cool idea, though.

I also wanna know what songs.

Good idea! :thu:..you need to put in a bit for harmonica players so they can sit in though..

I like the idea, though twenty tunes might be a bit ambitious considering all the other ground you need to cover.

that's part of the "skills" portion. how to keep a harmonica player from taking the stage. also covered are, "drum machines: you only need to punch the beat into them once" and "gear whores: how to find out if you might be one. with guest speaker, Greg Smith".

And lighting systems: No you don't need a light show like Kiss in a small club.....

what are the 20 songs?

If I told you I'd have to kill you.

:embarrassed:

Actually I was going to go through my song list and pull the 20 or so songs that I end up having to play at EVERY gig. Off the top of my head:

Sweet Home Alabama
The Joker
Brown Eyed Girl
Jessies Girl
867-5309 (Jenny Jenny)
Summer of 69
You Shook Me All Night Long
Hard to Handle
Don't Stop Believing - or other Journey song
Just What I Needed
What I Got
Blister in the Sun
Some blues song.
Mustang Sally
the 3 chord I IV V songs that are totally interchangeable song list
Play that Funky Music

The usual stuff..some songs have worked for 10 years or so and some of it is regional, I'm sure....

Sounds like a good idea. I would, though, ask a couple of bar owners what the most frequent requests are or something along those lines, and adjust the setlist based on that.

you can break them up into a series of offerings. how many sessions do you usually do?

Most of these classes start as a 3-4 month thing but end up going on indefinitely....once people get going they like to keep going :)

Maybe do 10 songs per session, and expand the list into a 50-60 song list...by then end of the year you can play a 4 hour night of the standards. In reality around here most of my peers can show up to one of these gigs and get through the night without rehearsal based on what we've all played for years, and popular music isn't really generating enough potential repertoire to worry about staying updated...we've really quite using the term "Top 40" band these days because of this.

Bar owners don't know and don't care. They just know who keeps the bar filled with beer buying customers. The rest is up to the band.

if you've got 12 sessions, then i think 20 songs is quite do-able. go for it.

In that case, it needs more Steppenwolf.

And maybe some Boston thrown in for good measure.
