Boss Re-Casing (Build Thread)

Pedals - Pedals - Pedals
Ok.

I'm gonna do it. I think I'll start with a small run. I have two BD-2s that I've modded to get rid of the shrill highs.

I'll use this as a build thread. If anyone is interested in the DIY re-case / re-housing, we can bounce ideas back and forth on here.

The big board is done, so I too am starting a small board (and also I can't leave well enough alone).

I ordered some 125B enclosures from PedalPartsPlus. Word on the street is that these are the only enclosures big enough to house the PCB. I also tried some 1590 enclosures but they're just a tad too short.

I did make a drill template with component measurements. This *should* be good but I haven't confirmed it yet. I'll also do a fat switch that will go in the 4th potentiometer spot.

I learned the value of the template doing @gtrjunior 's patch box.

I'm going to try and do the BD-2 mods this weekend.

ok. I don't know if I should thank you or get mad. I've never heard of PedalPartsPlus and their prices on coated enclosures are cheaper than Mammoth. You have just sent me down another rabbit hole. Day wasted and it isn't even 9:30 yet

I may be interested in one of these....pm me with pricing details etc...

Let me see how long it takes to do these, and if they're not an entire shit-show, we can talk.

On some enclosures they're more competitive depending on the color. What I do like is their on-enclosure graphic printing. They don't charge a set up fee and for $20 it's almost worth it. I'll submit my artwork with drill marks and my graphics and that's definitely justification to buy. You can also save a little if you have a drill press (or in my case) a firm grip and a cordless power drill.

I usually put "+" where I want to drill.

That's awesome.

Found some errors on the template. (attached an updated one).

Here's the template on the 125B box. The spacing on the pots is for the BD-2 level and tone (left side).

Made the mods on the pedal too... Took me about an hour.

For those of you playing along, here are the mods. I added a switch on the C100 cap to switch between 0.068uF and 0.1uF. It rounds out the sound of the pedal. This is a mish-mash of Keeley, Wamplers and various versions of BD-2 mods.

Pedal sounds great and plays nicely with the guitar volume knob. Next stop... Enclosure drillin'

I am anxiously awaiting the entire Pedals by Ryan line of botique pedals. Where do I sign up to be a tester?

I just ordered a prototype of the next pedal from the guy who built the Ohm pedal Mark was demoing from Reverb. I thought it was pretty cool that he is selling the prototypes and asking for feedback.

I tried to go down the road of prototyping, but it just simply became too time consuming. I got a promotion at work so I couldn't dedicate the time. I did a Klon clone... I got the schematic done and the circuit board built.. But then you have to test it... I started with a monster though. There really is an art to PCB layout.

So mods are my thing now. You can get a good game plan and execute it.

So here's this evenings update... A lesson in don't rush drilling. I'll add graphics so it'll cover the erroneous hole.

wups.

New grizaffics...

Based on the knob fit, I have to either scrap the knob titles or move them around. I saw a method on another forum to add graphics without using decal paper. Order the art supplies and they should be here by next week.

When you do the re-case, you have to remove the DC jack and replace it with an after market on.

Also the pedal actually works after moving the components. <- this is always a good thing.

And for the record, if anyone (@gtrjunior // @Chad ) wants to try out my pedals, just ask. If you like it you can send mine back and I can build you one of your own. It's chalking up to about a week's worth of time.

I think all the builders started off by doing mods. It is a good way to get started.
