Bilt Guitars — Any Of You Nerds Play/Own One

Peen Simmons

Let’s Get Obtuse!
Thoughts? Feelings? Impressions? Might be in a position to acquire something silly in a bit and have my eye on some stuff.

The Monster Guitar has so many knobs and switches I about had an aneurism just looking at it.

I had a Bilt El Hombre for a while and it was really nice. I have never played one of the fancier semihollow Starcaster-esque looking ones but I am sure they are of similar high quality.

Sean Lennon plays a Bilt something-or-other these days, or at least he did the last time I saw him.

What kind of deal? What model? Spill!

I came extremely close to getting one, fortunately I have a friend that has the same model I was looking at. It felt a bit too big really. Very nice guitar though. But didn't feel right.

That’s kinda what I’m concerned about. They look to be substantial guitars. I played a Zaftig and Relevator 100 years ago and I remember feeling like the overall experience was a bit “this is a chonky guitar.” But I memory can be slippery and it’s been a long time since I’ve tried one.

If you want, I can make a point to swing by there sometime soon and be a bit more in-depth on a specific model. I've not been there for a while since my dude there opened his own shop.

At this point in my life I could buy virtually any guitar I want. PRS, Fender custom shop, Gibson custom shop, Collins, Martin, Taylor, Heritage and I still wouldn't. I would be more inclined to build one than buy one. If I was looking to buy and someone told me it would take 2 years I would laugh in their face. Don't know how long these take but was recently reading where someone waited 2 years and the guitar isn't adapting well.

Build times on most bespoke/customish things are up. I assume labor/the economy/supply chain/etc. is vexing guitars just like everything else. I made an inquiry re: one beloved internet partscaster builder and they’re quoting 12 mo. as the shortest wait. Custom builds are often a crap shoot. I’m mostly looking into options because I’ve got some time to wait and consider and the more off the rack stuff I’d like to try is out of stock locally and won’t be in for a few weeks.

I wouldn’t want to play any guitar I could build/assemble. There are things I can do pretty well, but detailed handicrafts and mechanical work requiring patience aren’t those things.
