Bigger influence: Chuck Berry or Miles Davis?

Depends on what we mean by saying influentual? For me it means how many musicians in a field has been influenced by someone to play in a certain manner. And many guitarists in rock have perhaps not tried to play like Chuck, but mention others as their influence (Hendrix, Clapton, van Halen). But no trumpet player in jazz can say they have never tried to play in a Miles oriented style.

I’m way too dumb to be heavily influenced by Miles. I suspect most people are.
I suspect the influence by Chuck on most people would be singular and overt...the influence of Miles would be more on a subconscious level and show itse;f in a myriad of ways such as creativity and t"hinking out of the box" but certainly not limited to that...

Chuck inmfluenced the first wave and the basic launguage of rock . Miles influenced the growth and expanded the language. he furthered it to move forward rather than stagnate (think 12 bar blues or Blooze rawk...dead ended stuff...done, put a fork in it) Miles influenced movements like punk, funk, experimental...people like Frank Zappa, Jerry garcia, Trey Anastasio...you can hear the horn style in their playing so those would be overt examples. Something more on a subconciousl level would be a band like Fugazi...listen to their music and it certainly has more in common with Miles than Chuck.. I highly doubt they were listening to him (although it's definitely possible) .. Miles did for 'rock music" like what Bob dylan did for "rock lyrics".

Have a listen to this and decide whether it was influenced more by Chuck or Miles. I certainly would not think the members of Fugazi are dumb but not geniuses either. I doubt you are dumb either ...just not giving yourself a fair shake.

The question should be: Donald Duck or Mickey Mouse ... all famous musicians got their break through on that! The amateurs can switch on to Goofy or Peg-Leg Pete ...

I really don't hear any similarities between Miles Davis and any of these people.

Influencing those three would not even be a big deal even if it were true. You would not be the bob dylan of rock music for influencing jam bands to take solos.

That Fugazi song doesn't sound at all like jazz even if it has some soloing in it. When you include their entire catalogue instead of cherry-picking one track, they sound much more like Chuck Berry as does nearly every punk band.

I think you missed the whole point of my post...Miles has been a more subconscious influence where as Chuck was a singular "wear on the sleeve...paint by number, singular" influence.

Hope this helps.

Okay, let's say we grant that Phish actually counts as relevant music...

What is the actual influence on those people? Other than they take solos?

I mean it is like Yngwie fans saying he is influenced by classical music. And then you ask them in what way and they are like "because classical sometimes has the fast bits like in his songs." It's just vague analysis that means nothing.

yer like a Chuck berry influence bro...very overt. It's not whether you like phish...Phish is just an example. Phish is considered rock music.

Which one of those did Davis compose?

None , they were written by creative folk....Miles just gave em a good example how not to follow the rules.

Chuck wrote the Thoroughgoid song template ....all George had to do was press the right buttons at the right time, kinda like Guitar Hero,
