Bennie and the Jets, syncopation, and Soul Train

I need to learn more about drum kits and rhythms. This is some advice I found researching how to use syncopation.

"So, how can you learn to play more like Elton John?
  1. Lean your chords and inversions inside-out.
  2. Practice playing with different arpeggio shapes
  3. Practice playing drum kit rhythms on the piano (left hand = kick drum, right hand = snare drum/hi-hats)"

My contention is that Soul Train was always way better than American Bandstand. For one thing, Dick Clark was creepy.

AND, the music was sooooo much better.

I've always thought, when I hear Bennie and the Jets, the drummer is helping the piano player out. Like, the piano as an instrument just doesn't have enough oomph for a rock song. I'd like to hear what it sounds like without the drum track.
