Question: Beer guys. Clue me in to craft beers.

Saturday night my wife and I went to our new local bar and grill down the street. We don't go out for drinks that often, simply because a) her health limits her ability to drink, and b) we're old :(. BUT, I had a taste for some Guinness, hadn't had it in a long time, so I ordered a flight that included some. I was disappointed at how relatively weak it seemed, but maybe because over the years my tastes have drifted toward stronger brews. So, then I tried a glass of this:

New Holland Dragon's Milk.

BOOM - great, full flavor. And 10% ABV  - after two of these, I was half lit...

now y'all got me craving some fancy beers.
sadly, it's not an option here.
the hotel will never carry anything like that, nor does the grocery store.
just doesn't sell here.

I think we might have a case of Fort Garry Dark Ale in stock at the hotel, but I hate carrying bottles home, and it's not exactly cheap, either.

might just wander back to the grocery store and buy some vodka...nice plastic bottle
26 of voddy and a 2L of Coke, I'll be good to go.

I've been drinking microbrews/imports and brewing my own beer for many years - I have yet to find an IPA that I like, and have tried dozens. Heavily hopped beers just aren't my thing.

I don't find all IPAs to be "heavily hopped", though. Dogfish 60 and 90 for instance I find pretty balanced, even kinda sweet. And plenty fall on the "crisp" side more so than on the "bitter" side (Big Swell does this nicely I think...)

I'm a big hop fan. Some brewers do go overboard--Stone, for instance.
Whenever I brew a porter, I double the finishing hops. Makes for a very complex flavor and a really nice finish.

Maybe I don't hate hops. I've had this pilsner three nights in a row and it's starting to grow on me. It's a hoppy pilsner.

How did I miss this thread? It sounds like German beers are a good choice for you, BlackCat. I'm going to a free Kulmbacher tasting at Brauhaus Schmitz tomorrow.

You should definitely make a trip down to Philly for the beer scene.

Last night, it was a Belgian, Westmalle Tripel, with dinner at home.

Also, if you can find Victory or Troegs beers locally, they both have some strong German-style offerings. Look for Victory Prima Pils (or when it comes out this year, Summer Love, which is a hybrid beer) or Troegenator Double Bock.

I've been eyeing that one. I like leinies. How is it?

It's not hoppy enough for my usual tastes these days, but once in a while I like to change it up. Would buy again though. For someone not liking a hoppy beer it's probably a good choice.
