Battlefield V = Awesome WW2 goodness

My buddy and I have been playing the Battlefield series together since Battlefield 2 about 13 years ago. We've gone through Battlefield 2, Battlefield: Bad Company 2, Battlefield 2142, Battlefield 3, Battlefield 4, Battlefield 1 (World War 1) and this weekend we started the Battlefield V, set in World War 2, just released for Origin Premier members on Friday. It'll be available to the general public on the 20th.

It is amazingly gorgeous and the maps are, on balance, the best the series has ever seen. Rotterdam, both before and after its devastation, rural France, snowy Norway, desolate yet beautiful Northern Africa ... it's amazing to look at and to play.

I’m a huge Battlefield 1 fan, and I preordered Battlefield V. I was very worried after playing the beta. After playing the game with my neighbor this weekend, I’m considering canceling my preorder. I don’t understand why they felt the need to make so many changes from Battlefield 1. They really mucked it up imo.

@GDSmithTX any thoughts?

We’re you a fan of Battlefield 1? It’s onr of my favorite games, and I’m shocked they didn’t stick with the tried and true formula. I agree V looks great, but it seems to be at the expense of the game play. Maybe it’s because I’m old and I’m used to video with terrible graphics, but I’d rather have good game play than be able to count the blades of grass in a field.

It just seems clunkier to me. I also don’t understand wat they made it so you can’t figure who shot you in many situations. The change to the scoring system is odd as well.

Battlefield 1 was the first online shooter I’ve enjoyed. Mostly because you didn’t just spawn and immediately get killed belt a sniper or something. I’m sure the increased lethality of weapons in WWII is the major contributor to this but it’s still a bummer.

I’m still on the fence. I want to like it, but i still haven’t picked my preorder.

I like it.

I wasn't a huge BF1 fan, though my buddy and I did play maybe 60 hours online together, but compared to all the previous Battlefield games that was a huge dropoff.

I do have issues with it, like not being able to tell who shot you, and (particularly) the inability to "spot" enemy players for your teammates unless you're a sniper.

On the other hand, I really like the ability for non-medic players to revive downed squadmates. It offers such a great squad advantage that it encourages better squad cooperation and coordination

All-in-all, I really dig it.

Last week my friend and I tried sticking to 32-player servers instead of 64 and found less of the "being slaughtered within two steps" thing. In fact, we were on the winning side in 7 of 9 heavily-contested straight rounds spanning like 4 hours. That's some good gaming right there.

It has these "War Stories" segments where you play in various single player scenarios and challenges. I've played one that took a couple of hours; it was alright.
ok, thanks. yeah, I'm really a single player guy, but this looks so beautiful.

Do you guys do the headset thing and talk to other players?

We have a Teamspeak server that we've used for years. My buddy uses a headset, I use a standalone mic on my desk and the voice comes through on the center channel of my 5.1 surround speakers.

We have other friends who join in sporadically and they use the same chat server. We only talk to our own squad; the hell with all that other bullshit noise.

Yesterday while playing Conquest I got a bunch of really fun threatening messages from someone. Apparently, I killed them too many times. So he is now threating to kill me and my family. Not sure how he plans to accomplish this or why he feels the need to send me messages like that, but this is reason I hate people. I really don’t understand why they give people the ability to send you messages.

I thought I could avoid this stuff by not using the chat feature, I guess I thought wrong. I guess I will go back to games without online features. I don’t need this shit.

WTF?!? That sucks. How exactly did he send the message anyway? Via Origin or something? If you still have the messages on your system and they identify him by his player id, I'd report the little fuck with screenshots. And block further messages via whatever route in came in.

Nothing like that has never happened to me except some namecalling via chat, which is why I never have chat displayed because who needs the hassle of coming up with 1000 imaginative ways of labeling dickless wonders as dickless wonders?

Some stupid people are just going to be assholes, and the pseudo-anonymity combined with their stupidity makes them think they can do it with impunity. You do know it's a 15-year-old with 9 pubic hairs, right? Don't let a budding incel ruin your game for you.

I’m not really sure how he sent them. They popped up in the notifications you get about updates and what not.

I’m inclined to ignore them, but then you hear about people having swat teams show up at thier house. Judging by the excelent grammar, he’s about 10 years old.

They just have to find your PSN and can message you in the system, regardless of game. You can turn messages off in notifications though.
