The best of the RHCP stuff is great, energetic and even ground breaking in some ways... but the stuff that isn't their best is horrible. Anthony can hardly sing and he isn't much of a writer.

REM for me in that they were actually songwriters. Their 'most rocking' stuff doesn't compete with the RHCP best but overall I would rather 'get stuck' listening to them as their body of work appeals to my artistic side.

RHCP can be really good at times, but I can't stand their vocalist. Much more style than substance (song wise - they have had some outstanding musicians).

REM by a landslide.

REM for me.

I really like some RHCP material, and they could get a crazy good groove going, but I never totally bought into that band.

I love the RHCP up through Bloodsugarsexmajic. But REM wins by a landslide for me.

While I think I might like the Pepper's best stuff more and BSSM is for my ears the best album front to back from either band, R.E.M. has a far better catalog front to back.

REM wins again for me.

Both totally underwhelmed me live but REM much less so they win by default.

Never seen either live, but the footage of REM was consistently better than RHCP in the area of vocals. If you are performing vocal music, the singer should be able to sing it quite well live. Anthony frequently falls well short of this basic competence.

The main thing I remember of RHCP, who I saw twice, was the amount of wanky jamming they did. Both were headline festival slots around the Californication era so y know, just play the bangers and every one will be happy....

No,let's have Flea and Chad bounce off freestyling with each other for VERY extended periods!!!

REM were forgettable but at least tried to put a decent set out.

I get you. I can see ONE up to five minute freestyle jam featuring flea, but I would want the RHCP to focus on playing as many songs as possible.

I love jamming, but they aren't the band I'd really want to see exploring that live.

Good match, in the sense that they are both bands of great stature that I didn't really pay any attention to. Both are alt-arena. Both have songs I like when they're on the radio. REM has more albums that I can listen to all the way through. REM's failures are interesting, and Peps failures are embarrassing. If Peppers had quit an album or two after a key member left (say, after One Hot Minute) it might be closer, but I'd say it's pretty clearly REM unless I want to dance and sweat on a festival field for some psychoactive reason.

I'm surprised by the amount of REM love here. I could never really get into their brand of self important jangle-mope.

What's the frequency Kenneth has a pretty good riff I guess.

When I see statements like this, I can only think you only saw a handful of videos on MTV and you made your judgment, most likely post Green. Not that I haven't done the same thing with bands, hear a song or 2 and write them off.
