Well, that's the movie that every shitty parody movie coming out now is trying (and failing) to emulate. That one and Blazing Saddles.
For those who have seen that movie as much as I have, do yourself a favor and watch Zero Hour! It's the movie that Airplane! is spoofing most directly. In some cases, entire scenes and lines of dialog are lifted. It's spooky.
It's on my Netflix queue, has been for a few months, I've need to get around to watching it.
As for spoof movies, today they try to much to make fun of pop-culture and not the movies themselves. For instance, if I were making a spoof of sport movies I'd make fun of how the good team always plays the bad team and loses early in the season, then the good team gets better and beats them in the championship. For instance I'd have the coach or a player from the bad team tell someone from the good team after the early loss "Hey don't worry, maybe if you practice real hard to a music montage you'll be able to beat us in the championship." Dumb, I know, but that's why I'm not a comedy writer, or any writer for that matter. Spoof movies today would have Micheal Jackson's Zombie playing pee-wee baseball with little kids, insert obvious pedo joke and then he is seen moon-walking around the bases. It's funny because Michael is popular and he moonwalks on stage, but you don't usually moonwalk around the bases!! Get it! It's so funny!!!
In short, recent spoof movies are making fun of the wrong things and they make it too obvious. Spoof jokes need to be slightly un-obvious, or just so out-there that it's hilarious, such as "Captain, they must be miles off course. - Can't be, they're on the instruments" *cut to cockpit where the crew is playing in a nawlenz dixie time fun band* Now
THAT'S funny. I'm sick of fucking pop culture being shoved down my throat. South Park does it in every episode. Family Guy has always done it. MAKE UP YOUR OWN GOD DAMNED PLOTS AND JOKES!!!!!! Parody is only funny for so long, notice that Weird Al isn't around much anymore?
end. of. rant.
