Another stupid list is stupid...50 most anticipated of Fall 2015

avuncular to no one
It's just yahoo, but it's not like there's any mainstream entertainment press that covers music worth a damn...

Can't say that I'm too "eager" for any of them, but there are about 10 that I'll eventually listen to. I'll most likely buy the new Gilmour and am interested in hearing the new Squeeze album. Cornell's and Silversun Pickups' latest are also something I'll check out sooner than later.

I'm actually surprised that Squeeze, Ben Folds, and Silverpups made any such list.

I only got through about the first ten. Demi Lovato, Selena Gomez, Justin Bieber... Remember back in the day when ugly people with talent could make music that people would buy? I guess at least Duran Duran can play instruments and sing without a supercomputer rendering their warbles into something resembling music...

I weep for the future of music. I mean, there has always been talentless-but-beautiful hack front-men (and women) for producers to mold and commercialize, but I do not believe there has ever been a time when the music industry was so dominated by such. AND, as we all know, the proliferation of sequenced, massaged, auto-tuned vocals has allowed people who have no business in this business to succeed and elbow aside actual artists like never before. <click> rant mode off.

John Frusciantte plays guitar on several of the tracks on the new Duran Duran album. Nile Rogers teamed up with them again as well (Nile played almost all of the guitars on the 1985 album "Notorius". Considering former Zappa and Missing Persons guitarist Warren Cuccurullo spent 15 years with Duran Duran, they should be one of the most respected bands on MWGL.

Not many bands can offer up that much street cred when it comes to having such a rich history of guest slingers.

Yeah -- that's why I purposely declined to put them into the same category: To me, (along with perhaps Adele), they are the sole representatives of what I would call "real music" in the top of that list. I don't like Duran Duran, but I can respect the fact that they have talent.

It's been a great year for music, IMO, though you wouldn't know it by looking at this list.
From their list, there's only a few I'm looking forward to, new ones from Battles, Eagles of Death Metal, Dead Weather, and Silversun Pickups. I'll probably give Duran Duran, Gilmour and Gary Clark a listen too.

Luckily, there's more to come from bands that fly under the radar of crap lists like this.

I hate agreeing with this in general, but it's hard to argue. I saw King's X last night at a small venue (maybe a few hundred people were there, certainly not it's 500 capacity). While making the final decision to go to the show while waiting for a train, one of the other trains had a Ed Sheeran poster two shows at the Verizon Ctr next week. So right there, this guy will come damned close to selling out two night at a more than 18K capacity venue and King's X can't sell out the Birchmere. That's just fucked up. Ed has TWO flipping albums and despite being able to sing, isn't doing anything to elevate the art form.

Unfortunately music has completely jumped the shark to just being another undynamic "art" form, at least as far as the general public is concerned. Further the masses of asses are okay with it. I even started looking at getting tickets for the Sheeran shows as I'm dying for my oldest son to have a passion for music without shoving anything down his throat and he likes Sheeran (really just one song and due solely to it being a song featured in a soundtrack for one of the Hobbit movies). Ed may not be as inherently bad/evil as most of what's on the list, but despite his success...well see above.

I just keep listening to what I like and it's almost never anything beyond fringe popularity. I'll try to support those that are doing things I enjoy and find interesting as long as they keep me interested (and often well beyond...as in buying new albums from certain bands/artists out of habit and the hope for prolonged/new magic). I would have clearly failed as a music executive, as I actually care about the music and have no concern for the package.

New Grimes might be interesting if she really did get away from the awful commercial stuff she was trying to do. I’ll give the Darlene Love album a spin, but I’m not expecting much from a Darlene Love album in 2015.

I barely got through half of the samples from the Duran Duran album. Blech!
A few in that list caught my eye and will at least get a listen:
David Gilmour — Rattle That Lock
Don Henley — Cass County
New Order — Music Complete
Eagles of Death Metal — Zipper
Squeeze — Cradle to the Grave

They left off the only albums I'm anticipating:
Servant of Love - Patty Griffin

Nashville Obsolete - Dave Rawlings Machine

I take my hat off to all those who had the fortitude to go through the entire list to find those few nuggets (well, perhaps bits of gold dust) in the muck, but tell me the truth: Did you throw up in your mouth just a little?

I've had the new Duran in the car for a couple of days. Certainly not their best offering, but there are some really impressive bits.

New Order... No Peter Hook. That's gonna be a hard sell.

Of those listed that I would consider buying I went to iTunes and listened to samples:
Coheed and Kambria: No, just not for me.
Gary Clark, Jr.: I bought Gary's first album and while I really love his guitar heavy shit the cd comes across as not focused because there's sounds from Parliament, Stevie Wonder, and Prince. Same with this cd. The songs with heavy guitar kick ass, the rest not my thing so I'm going to pass this time around. It's fantastic that he has all that talent but if you want me to pay the full price of admission I've got to like more than the third of the movie.
David Gilmour: Sounds like he always sounds to me. Love him in Pink Floyd just not for me alone.
Slayer: Most improved sound but not my brand of bourbon.
Kieth Richards: See David Gilmour with the addition of same old shit since 1963.
Sevendust: Two songs listed where I could listen to samples; I liked both. Heavy and thunderous. I may buy it after I can hear the rest if they are as good.
I saw Dead Weather on Steven Colbert last night: Interesting, woman had great vocals, guitar and bass player both had instruments that looked like the Gretch White Falcon. Good but not a music style I like.

I liked Don Henley's solo stuff. I may give his new one a listen.

Gilmour's last one was good, a bit sleepy, but I'll probably pick up his new one too.

It's just a pop-centric list with a couple of alternative albums on there to please the actual music fans, I suppose. While it's sad that the money from the Demi Lovatos and Drakes doesn't trickle down to A&R to support new artists, that isn't the big act's fault. Dumbed down music with a pretty face has always been the popular thing. They've just got the formula down really good now. There's quite a bit of pop music that I actually like, when it's well done.

The surprising one on the list for me was Battles. Even some of my most open-minded friends find them challenging. I think they're great, and Jon Stanier's one of my favorite drummers of all time. I used to jam with one of the founding members (no longer with the band).
Here's their newest -

Maybe the Slayer, and maybe the Jewel album.

The rest of that 50, meh :embarrassed:

Gloryhammer - Space 1992: Rise of the Chaos Wizards
Queensryche - Condition Human
Circle II Circle - Reign of Darkness
Stryper - Fallen

Now we're talking :)

And yes, it's supposed to be cheesy and over the top. What would you expect from the guy that brought us the band Alestorm

Gilmour is the obvious one for me, seeing him live in Oberhausen this Saturday (a day after the new album's out).

Other than that, not anything I'm particularly looking forward to the coming months.
Then again, I'm still digging the hell out of the Maiden colossus of an album that just came out. :)
