Analog delay in front on all the time

Yes, that's Oolong. :)
Anybody use an analog delay in front of the amp as part of their overall sound?

Thinking of trying it, I've got reverb in the loop but a subtle echo in front might he really cool. Saw a Pete Thorn vid about doing that, if you dual it in right it's pretty sweet!

Related... There's an Ibanez AD9 for sale on CL locally for 60 bucks. Rave reviews and a great price apparently. It only goes to 300 ms tho... think that's too restrictive?

Thanks for any insight!

I think, like you said, it's going to be dependent on how you mix it in...too high a level and it's just going to muddy up everything...

As far as the AD9...300ms would be considered a short delay time if it were digital, but for analog it's in the margins...keep in mind that a slapback delay usually uses a 75-100ms delay time, and at a tempo of 60bpm a quarter-note delay (in 4/4 time) would be 1 second, and a 16th note delay would be 250ms...at 120bpm those timings would be 500ms and 125ms respectively...so a 300ms delay would still be quite usable for added ambiance in front of a reverb...

The amps I gig with now don't have effects loops. I don't use that sound anymore. My delay's are typically last in the pedalboard chain. I use them for either slapback or ambience and depth.

The last time I used an effects loop was in the early 90's when I still used rack gear. I had a delay in the loop and one in the front of the amp. The one in front is for slapback and the looped was for depth and swells. Best way to capture the 80's lead sound

I use delay set on ducking to lay back when I play, last in line, in front of the amp. Not all the time. I just can’t leave delay on all the time.

I have a little Donner Yellow Fall quasi-analog delay almost always on in front of my amp.

Yeah I was looking at those, ended up getting a Joyo JF-33 instead. Sounds good with my little practice amp, will try it out Saturday with my main rig and the band.

It is very dynamic... you hit the strings hard and it really comes through, even on pretty low mix settings. I don't know that I'll leave it on all the time but it does add some nice reverb-like depth.

For years my delay was a real, tape Echoplex, I still approach my delay use similar to how I used the Echoplex — mostly 0ne-trwo repeats in front of the amp. I also don't own a single amp with a loop anymore.

Ditto on the amps and I used to own a couple of EP4's eons ago.
