Al Cisneros (constantly) tuning

I saw Sleep play in Colorado last night. Al Cisneros was using his Rickenbackers, and he spend what seemed to be an excessive amount of time getting his bass back in tune after almost every song. I’ve noticed in live videos that this seems to be a regular thing with him. Do Rickenbackers have crap tuners, or does Al just do something that constantly pulls him out of tune?

I'm not familiar with the guy or his music, but is it maybe just alternate tunings?

Edit: nvm, misread your post. I am definitely familiar with sleep, and iirc they tune down significantly, yeah? Seems like that could cause some tuning issues if the bass isn't set up properly. It'd be weird if that were the case, but weirder things have happened.
