I've lived two places in that first pic and worked at a third. Also, the label for Manhattan is wrong. That's Roosevelt Island. Manhattan is the next piece of land to the west.

Been there. Paddled a skiff from City Island.
Also went to Hart Island, another abandoned island

LOL. Never been there but was thinking, shouldn't Manhattan have lots of tall buildings.

yeah why is it still not occupied. Hipsters could capitalize and make it a tiny house/off grid island but with daily ferry to the Brooklyn

If you and mongooz would bother to actually read the article, you'd see that it's currently a bird sanctuary. All of the small islands in the East River and Long Island Sound were/are prisons and/or asylums. North Brother Island was home to Typhoid Mary. Lots of weird vibes and superstition to overcome in making them habitable. even Roosevelt Island is just getting over that, and it's been 50 years since it was called Welfare Island.

Ferry service, which just started last year, ends at Hallet's Point, which is just south of the western coastline of Queens on the first map. Brooklyn is much further south. Hipsters don't exist except in the minds of middle aged white people and everyone is moving to The Bronx and Far Rockaway.

Ok at first I thought you were being constructive...I admit I did not read the article but only because this is an internet forum and I expected someone to give me the cliff notes *spits* but now I know you are trolling me when you say that hipster do not exist. They most certainly do....

non hipsters do not dress this way. Hipsters appropriate /mix and blend , use irony, etc etc all in a way to stand out so that they feel unique (in their mind) when in fact they are just predictable sheeple...

anyway the above image is from the NY Times HOW I BECAME A HIPSTER so either it's fake news or it's real. I'm going with it's real.

Here's an image from the website "hipwilliamsburg" I am assuming hip is short for hipster so obviously if a website like this exsists it means hip(STERS) exists..amiright ?

Because Williamsburg has come to be known as a capital of cool, some people ask what to wear when they visit. While the true meaning of hipness has always been to carve out your own unique style, there are certain trends you can add to your summer 2015 look to make you more Brooklyn-ready.

The New York Times' idea of hipster was outdated when that article was new, and that was 5 years ago. Also, if there are still hipsters, they can't afford to live in Williamsburg anymore. It's too expensive.

Those are just people. New York is, was, and will always be, weird.

There most certainly are hipster TRENDS...the jet black California Gold Rush beard is one that is pretty tired but still going strong.

From hipwilliamsburg again.....

Look at this guy

I am 100 percent sure that this type of shirt never was popular or functional in Brooklyn or anywhere in the overpopulated east coast....it was a ranch shirt, a cowboy shirt. The beard has already been discussed. Is this guy a time warping truck driver from 1977 ? why the trucker hat indoors? Is the sun bright? Is he just appropriating and producing an image of things which are trendy (perhaps tredster would be a better word than hipster...semantics ya know) also look at his leg there....fucking cutoff jean shorts....The dude probably pays rent of 1800 a month and he has to cut the legs off jeans? or is he buying these already cut off for like 145 dollars....trednsters *spits*

That article is from 4 years ago. It's ancient history. That guy can't even afford to live in Greenpoint anymore. Probably moved to East New York.

The Bronx is over priced .
It is a forgotten borough, but a great place.
Try buying a house in the Pelham Parkway, area near Eastchester Road.
Good area,but high dollar.
If I could afford to move back to The Bronx, a small house on City Island would be perfect.

Not ancient history when it’s still relevant. I bet that outfit he had on including beard wax probably cost him like 300 dollars .....I’m sure he can afford the rent

I read the article. All the way through it, I was expecting a sinister reason it was uninhabited. They go on and on about diseases. At the end, they finally tell you they just don't know what to do with it.

"
Everyone left in 1963, and the city took custody of the island. A lack of management made it a looting grounds for vandals. To this day, the city has yet to figure out if and how it will let the public set foot there again."

Maybe money to get rid of the building that are on the verge of collapse has something to do with it.

Cool thread about interesting historical island devolves into argument about flannel shirts and beard wax.

Yup.

'Bout right.
