Looking at Chris Rice work yesterday reminded me of other builders that used to hang on forums.
There are a few of you who may remember Tom Pettingill as "Quarter" on Harmony Central. Eventually, Tom took his amazing wood working skills and started making lapsteels, the designs were base don classic lapsteel models (Rickenbacker, Supro, National, Oahu. etc.) but with a lot more wood working. Tom passed away (heart attack, IIRC) long before I could afford to commission something. There weren't many made and each one was a different design, so I grabbed one of the few that have gone through Reverb. I have no intention to make this "bender" week, but this just happen to have palm benders, which are the current rage on lapsteels.
Offered for your consideration is a gorgeous, custom made, one-of-a-kind, lap steelfrom renowned builder Tom Pettingill of Southern California. The stunning combination of quilted maple and pommel sapele attest to Tom's tasteful choice of materials used in the construction of "Angel". It is equipped with a Duesenburg Multibender bridge to raise or lower strings like a pedal steel guitar. You can ignore the levers and play it like a conventional lap steel orchange the levers to different strings, and use any tuning imaginable. The guitar currently has 3 levers. I have it tuned EBEG#BE with levers raising G#to A, B to C#, and E to F. It has Hipshot locking tuners to make string changes a breeze, gold mother-of-pearl inlay, BG-Pups custom wound pickup set, 4-wayrotary pickup switch, hand-rubbed oil finish, 24.5" scale, and a Kevin Hatton custom built, tweed case that fits like a glove. The workmanship on this guitar is second to none and the 4-way rotary pickup switch gives you a widerange of "tonal bliss". Simply put, you will not find a better crafted and better sounding steel anywhere. Both guitar and hardshell case are in excellent + condition.
