Coralkong
Alien
I am going to try remain objective on these, and point out what I see are the good and the bad for my rentals.
Last episode was a Hyundai (something-or-other) that was utterly forgettable, to be honest.
My latest victim, er, I mean, car up for review is the 2013 Toyota Corolla.
First, the good:
Tons of headroom. I am 5'10" and think you could be upwards of close to 7 feet tall before you had cramped headroom.
Interior is sparse, upholstery is cheap, but tastefully done. Doesn't seem to feel as cheap as it obviously is.
The car is tight, not a lot of noises, or "rattling", everything fits as it should and it appears to be put together well.
Tight turning circle.
The bad:
I have had lawnmowers with more torque than this thing. Woefully underpowered. Getting onto a highway from the on-ramp, I had to gun it. It made a ton of noise, but just sat there.....what's up with that?
The suspension in this thing is also pitiful. Someone decided it was a good idea to attach a "sport-like" suspension on this thing. It feels every bump in the road. The Hyundai I had before was "vague" at best, this is ridiculous. Why bother putting a sporty suspension on a car with no power to do anything about it?
You can't see the front of the car from the driver's seat. As a matter of fact, you can't even see the hood.
Any of it. I mean, you see the bottom of the windshield where it meets the dash, and then there is nothing. Terrible design.
The engine sounds like it is idling low, like almost to the point of stalling. It really doesn't project the image of any power whatsoever, and while I am aware it is a small car with a small engine, I want some kind of reassurance that it isn't going to just break with less than 3 thousand miles on it.
Overall:
I would not buy this car.
If it was under $10K new, you could make a case for it having some kind of purpose. But it is probably almost twice that much, and it really does feel like driving a potato.
Gas mileage is not spectacular, though it is pretty good, with me currently getting 30 mpg in mixed driving conditions.
That being said, it just feels cheap, over-styled, over-produced, and the fact that the suspension is tuned for sporty driving is a bit of a joke.
So there you have it.
