2010 Winter Olympics

My eyes will be pretty square by the time the Olympics are over. :embarrassed:
Probably catching as much of it as I can, apart from the hockey and figure skating - which I find insufferably boring.

Watching a rerun of the opening ceremony right now (in HD, of course ).
That's some really impressive graphics/projector stuff they're doing.

We get hours and hours of figure skating here, since it's one event this country does well at. I really enjoy it now, but then again I really enjoy curling as well. And despite today's tragedy, I think the luge is still the most exciting event to watch.

Curling is something I really enjoy watching. :thu:
I'm hoping for a reprise of the Canada-Norway final from the last Olympics, which was an epic thriller.

I enjoy watching curling too, in small doses.

The Canadian team that one was from Newfoundland (Canada sends the provincial team that wins a specific tournament), and they were the first Newfoundlanders to win Olympic medals, and they got gold, so that was kind of special back "home". There's a stretch of highway out by St. John's named after them.

It's a different team this time around, same skip who competed in the 2002 Olympics.

Yeah, different team from Norway as well, a better one than the last we had.
Almost all the players on the last team have retired since then (the skip is now the leader of the curling association here).

Usually whoever wins the Norwegian championship gets to represent the country in the international competitions.

Oh, and what a facepalm...
Have such a terrific singer as kd lang performing, and then have her sing fucking Hallelujah.
I wish people would stop using that song for every occation imaginable.

Well, she's kind of associated with that song now, for some reason, having recorded it...

But I agree. IMHO, it should have been put to rest after Jeff Buckley died. It's a beautiful song, but it's been completely ruined by the fact that it's been done by everybody for everything, usually inappropriately.

I did a  when she started singing.

I feel the same way about Barber's Adagio for Strings. I kept waiting for Willem Defoe to run out towards center stage, only to be cut down by enemy fire, looking very Christ-like.

Yeah. I've actually had to sing it at a church christmas concert. :annoyed:
Needless to say I struggled with keeping a straight face doing that. :embarrassed:

While I haven't followed kd lang much lately, it's not like her songs are generally terrible, so there should be alternatives to what was done.

She's a great singer though, in any event. :)

The luger meets pole deal kinda sucked...

Imagine being the next person to go down that run. (shudders)

The sad thing is that we were watching the Modern Marvels episode with the Winter games on it with my son Thursday night and one of the things that he was really excited with was the Luge...I made a point of not having any of the Olympics stuff on while he was around yesterday. :(

It's on! :)

Ski jumping (something I'd never attempt to try out, btw :embarrassed:), this could very well be what gets us our 99th winter olympic gold.

Sometimes the "logic" in this country makes me really wonder. I'm checking the TV station's broadcast schedule. The TV stations decided (a few years back) that to avoid confusion of times, 12 noon would be designated as 0:embarrassed:0 and 1PM is now 01:embarrassed:0. messedup0

Not to worry, there's short track (whatever that is) coming up (I think)...

Weird logic indeed. messedup0

Well, horrible first day for the Norwegians in 3 disciplines we'd normally get medals (5000 m speedskating, women's biathlon sprint, and normal hill ski jump) - 4th, 9th and 10th places. :embarrassed:

Hopefully the King of winter sports, Ole Einar Bjørndalen, will make things a bit better tomorrow in the men's biathlon sprint.

Well, commiserations to your country then. I saw one jump that Tom Hilde (is that your guy?) did. The coach looked pretty pleased at that stage.

Well, we're the most winning country in the winter olympics, so expectations up here are downright silly. :embarrassed:

Yeah, Hilde got the 12th place iirc. As expected really, as he's our 3rd best jumper. Anders Jacobsen should normally have been in the top 3, but got hit hard with nerves today (not unusual for debutants).
