Hardcore car guys can conjure up all kinds of reasons to justify getting an old car. Midlife crisis. I had one just like it when I was a kid. The wife told me to get one. I needed a retirement project. I sold a car and had room in the garage. One followed me home. I saved it from the crusher. The owner couldn’t take care of it anymore …

Pick one. There is always a good reason.

Dave Beck had his own unique reason for bringing home a tired old Oldsmobile station wagon. “Back in 2000 my son informed us that we were going to be grandparents, and all we had were hot rods and Corvettes and stuff like that,” recalled the Union Grove, Wis., resident. “Nothing to haul kids, so my mission was to find a big vehicle that we could haul the kids around in. Actually, we bought this vehicle the same day my daughter-in-law went into the hospital to have the baby, which was my oldest grandson [Kaleb], who is now 18.

While I love Nomads, I like this because you never see one. It looks to be an excellent restoration, and the conversation he had with the original owner is priceless.

Remember when Dad or Grandpa would faithfully stick to a manufacturer? Well, my father was no exception, and he was an Oldsmobile guy. Grandpa started with Fords, but when half the family started working at the GM facility in nearby St. Louis, everybody drove GMs (60s-80s).

Dad's first Olds was a '55 Super 88 Holiday Coupe. After he got married and I came along, he moved up to the '58 Super 88 Holiday, then the Dynamic 88 Holiday in '63, the Delta 88 in 1970 and finally the 1975 Delta 88 before he jumped ship to Toyota (the '78 Corolla). And get this, all of them were in white, except for the '55, which was two tone aqua, and white.

I'd love to find an Aqua/Ivory '55 for him one day. I think it's officially "Polar White over Frost Blue"

Dad is now 81, still rides a Harley and drives a 40' RV with his SUV in tow. The guy is a freak of nature, but his father was too, out-fishing me and Dad into his 90s.
