Tell me about a time you were yelled at straight to your face in front of people.

blah, blah, blah...
No need to get personal but I'll volunteer my wife and I yelled a bit about ten years ago and never since but never in front of others.

Three plus decades ago my fiance and I were taking SCUBA lessons at the YMCA pool just before our wedding and honeymoon. By the time we got to the written test week of the course there were just four of us left. My fiance and another young couple. I scored a 96%. I missed one multiple choice question. My wife missed a couple but passed the 80% minimum with a 92%. The instructor asked if we had any questions about the test results. I read the question and my answer. I was trying to make a case for my "wrong" answer by saying the question wasn't clear. i was saying it with a smirk knowing it was prolly a losing argument...

and then this young lady SCREAMED at me "shut up! Some of us didn't do so well." She showed me her 50% score. I was mortified. one that she screamed as loudly as she did. then that someone could score so low. I looked at her, then her boyfriend, then the teacher and then my fiance. Nobody said anything for what seemed like the longest time ever. Somewhere off in the distance, a dog barked. I cleared my throat and said "ok your turn to ask questions." She didn't have any then stormed out. The teacher thanked me for not escalating it, her boyfriend said he was sorry on his way out and my fiance and I are still rockin'. We can't SCUBA anymore. The other couple never showed up for the underwater pool skills testing the last week. She had no place going deep underwater with her lack of basic information. That test may have saved her life.

Whatcha got?

i got yelled at for acting the fool at a musicians gathering in my younger days. playing someone else's drum kit with comical abandon and (unknowingly) messing up the wooden floor underneath it at the place we had gathered. the guy hosting yelled at me for my "rodeo clown shit" and i got indignant and stormed off but he was totally right.

My wife and I were at a shopping center, years ago, minding our own business when a police officer yelled at us straight to our faces in front of people, out of the blue. Turned out there was a bomb threat and they were clearing the place. We just hadn't noticed what was going on. Nothing happened.

You motherfuckers have never worked for some of the utter assholes I have. I worked for the CEO of a non-profit research consortium for over ten years - he was a bully who'd driven a lot of people away. The only way I survived was when he'd start up I'd get right in his face and start screaming back. Surprised I never got an ulcer...

When I was the head of I.T. for a fortune 500 company, I got called out to the job site for one of the companies that we owned.... I installed a system (that I had zero heads up about prior to that morning) but when I had to leave the job site to get back to my regularly scheduled work at the corporate office, the foreman started ripping me a new asshole like I was a hired IT grunt.

I stood there with a straight face while he went on a tie raid about why this wasn't done sooner and he expected me to do a/b/c... and when he finished, I said "You seem to be confused. I don't work for you. What I did today is a favor. If you have any issues with that, you can speak to [_President CEO who was my direct report_]" and left. Never heard a peep from him again.

Ironically enough... above mentioned CEO was a known hot-head who was known for screaming at people and belittling them. I told the CFO at one point that he would only have ONE opportunity to scream at me like that. I would lock down the network and walk out the front door. :helper:

A few weeks ago, my younger brother yelled in my face at a family gathering over something trivial. He's bipolar and an alcoholic. I kept my cool while fighting off the urge to punch him in the face. He's family, so I put up with him. Otherwise, I would not associate with him.

Over the last year, as my mother was slowly losing her cognitive abilities, descending toward death in slow motion, I watched her lash out at my sisters, yelling to their faces. Of course, they were the main two helping her. They got really good at shrugging it off. Thankfully, my Mom did not do that to me in the last years of her life. R.I.P.

Years ago one of my bosses would periodically get upset about something and yell in my face. Growing up, my father was often yelling about something, so I developed the ability to keep my cool under those circumstances. I forgave my Dad his faults, but I hated that boss. I was happy when the boss transferred out to work in another part of the country. His replacement was a huge improvement.

Does basic training count?

Shit, I wasn’t standing on the ground 5 minutes at Lackland AFB before I drew the attention of a drill instructor who wore my ass out for 10 minutes in front of 100 or so people. Brim of that Smokey Bear hat right up against my forehead several times.

With that in mind I use to train new fuckers all the time how to deploy and retake Launch Control Facilities and I too would chew off their ass at times. Trying to motivate them to save their own ass. Nobody is going to be strolling calmly along. Regardless of what’s going on you must perform precisely and rapidly.

I'm a middle school teacher. I'm routinely berated by 11 year olds about why I let so and so go to the bathroom first, what their parent will do when they hear I've confiscated their phone, and more.

Fifth grade, young Ryan fell into a large infatuation with a girl named Beth, months went by, Peter Criss sang to his own Beth on the radio, compounding my own romanticism. Young Ryan decides to write her a note confessing to his love of her hair, eyes, and Grace in which she seemed to glide through the classroom as others stalked around like zombies (I'm just making shit up here, I'm pretty sure I only said she was cute, and I have no idea if she was graceful, but bear with me). A friend slipped her the note, she read it on her bus ride home, I assume surrounded by girlfriends. The next day she was standing with friends and they were all looking at me at recess. She started making her way over to me, gently gliding across the gray linoleum floor from the lockers to the windows where I held fast. She entered my private space for the first time, turned into a lioness and screamed "I HATE YOU!!!!!" Inches from my face, at the top of her voice for everyone to hear.

I came into my own looks-wise around 8th grade, had plenty of girls after me, stalking my football games and such and never actually had to ask a girl out or slip a note again, which was fabulous, because I still have a huge phobia about rejection to this day.

She started hanging out with another mutual friend in our group around freshman year and was sitting with me just shooting the shit while sled riding one night and I brought it up somehow. She claimed not to remember that it even happened. I doubt you can do something like that and just forget about it.

My college aged son wanted to teach history in middle or high school. Half-way through college he changed his mind. I was generally happy with his decision even though it will delay his graduation.

Teaching is a tough gig. I'm just glad people still want to do it. I'm afraid education is going to need a bit of a revolution before it gets better for both student and teacher.

My ex girlfriends dad was a total piece of shit. Real scumbag - his wife (lovely woman) with many medical issues keeled over and died hanging out the washing out one Sunday whilst he sat on his fat arse on the couch gambling on the horses.

During the funeral the minister made a comment about how much she did for the family and that's how she passed. Totally innocent (and factual) the guy lost his shit and spent the night of his wife's funeral berating his 3 heartbroken daughters over the comment!

I'm actually getting angry thinking about him.

One time we were at his place, the gf and I had taken his granddaughter out for the day - bowling, beach, lunch etc. while he and a fat odious piece of shit he shacked up with about 2 months after his wife's death got all cosy at home.

Upon our return my gf felt unwell, I was sat with an arm around her. No PDA or anything like that, just trying to comfort her and this prick is sat 5 feet away making passive aggressive comments to nobody - "who does he think he is coming into my house touching my daughter?" As I'm sitting right across from him.

In retrospect I showed tonnes of restraint, especially as a fairly hot headed young man but I challenged him and asked what his problem was, id taken his granddaughter out, never disrespected him, his family or his house etc in the years I'd been with his daughter. he lost his shit. What followed was a 25+ stone man chasing me out of his house with a golf club he kept by the couch.

Cue him standing foaming at the mouth in his garden screaming at me and welding this golf club while I quite purposely keep calm - "why are you being like this Derek? You're scaring (daughter and granddaughter) Derek, are you OK Derek, how can I help you calm down Derek?"

I could have kicked the shit out of him but doing that ^ further enraged him and made him look like an even bigger cunt than usual in front of the neighbours shouting like a mad man.

Sadly it killed that otherwise pretty awesome relationship. She was talking about cutting turn all off (one of the sisters was horrible too) but I couldn't expect her to do that for me. He died a few years ago, I have never celebrated or revelled in anyone's death until that point.

I qualified in history though my career has taken quite the step away from that (largely due to the lack of history jobs).

I love my current role and being special ed, it's pretty recession proof the way things are going but if I had to go back, I seriously doubt I'd have taken up teaching knowing what I do now and I have many friends in mainstream that feel the same.

Your job must make you really good at keeping your shit together in any situation.

Your job must make you really good at keeping your shit together in any situation.

It definitely helps - staff who panic and flap when shit is hitting the fan (which on occasion is a literally happening!) are of no use as they massively increase the risk of things getting worse or someone getting hurt.
