and a question of course. The DOD FX-55b says it needs a 10v adapter, even though it takes a 9v battery. If I hook it up to my 1SPOT power adapter, what are the consequences?

A 9 volt DC power outlet should be fine. Looks like the 9v plug is non standard.

DOD made multiple pedals from that time that are rated for a 10v power supply. Of course, it’s an oddball voltage. Players have tons of 9v power supplies. Almost nobody has a 10v supply. Fortunately, there are players all over the internet that have reported that DOD 10v rated pedals will run off a 9v supply.

Will the pedal operate and sound exactly the same at 9v as it does at 10v? Maybe not. It could affect headroom. It could affect the maximum volume output of the pedal. Since it’s a dirt pedal, it could affect the way it clips. Try it and see what you think. If you like the way the pedal feels, sounds, and operates at 9v, then you’re fine.
 
The DOD adapter is in the PO box, so I'll pick that up on the way home. Gotta do some work on the Afterburner, but that Buffered Line Driver does a helluva job boosting the Valve Jr. One thing I noticed, and this might be working as intended, the first time I switch on the boost it takes a few seconds to warm up. I'm guessing SOP is to turn the thing on for a few seconds before you're going to be switching it on and off?

Man, between work and kids and everything I haven't yet made time to futz around with it. I did crack open the Afterburner, and at least part of the intermittent issue with that one is a broken ground to the output jack, so I'll have to dig out the soldering iron. Hoping to get to it this week/weekend so I can haul it all to my bro-in-law's when I head down there for the Social Distortion show :thu::dude:
 
@jrockbridge the funny thing about it wanting a 10v adapter, it runs off a standard 9v battery. I dunno man.

Ok, plugged in the FX-55b Supra (Tele, Valve Jr). Pots were scratchy and cutting out but the power adapter with the 1Spot at least got the LED to light up. Deoxit'd the pots, gave them some wiggles back and forth, plugged it in again, and it's back in business. Now, it's been so long since I've used the damn thing I don't remember if it used to do this super-fuzz-bitcrusher effect as the input faded out, but at the setting I used to run (bridge pickup, Distortion cranked high, Tone cranked low) it sounds just like I remember.

Putting the boost in front of it just makes it sound like hot turds no matter what I did with the Supra knobs, but I'll keep playing with it for something to do.

Conventional wisdom says the order of drive pedals is supposed to be low gain to high gain. Some people like, boost > low gain > mid gain > high gain. I prefer the opposite, high gain > mid gain > low gain > boost.

I prefer boost after all drive pedals so that it can be a true volume boost. High gain pedals tend to have ragged edges to the gain, which is ok if that’s what you want. I prefer smoother high gain tones. I’ve noticed that when I run a high gain into a mid gain, or low gain pedal, the result can be a smother high gain sound.

Try Supra Distortion > Fab Distortion > Afterburner > Line Driver. You may find you like it. Put the Chorus wherever you want. Just my 2 cents.
 
Yeah, I was gonna play around with it. Not that I think any of those dirts necessarily need to play well together, they are all kinda their own vibe except the boost. But the only person it's gotta impress is me :lol:
