Question: HEAT CHECK - Would I like to post a thread to gauge the interest in possibly maybe having a "Smurfstock" get-together in Austin in May (or September)?

I wonder about a lot of folks that used to post here. @GuitarHeel seems to have deleted his handle, along with @HelpImARock and @eloydrummerboy. I forget McFeely's handle, but haven't seen a post from him, @VoidTerraFirma or @jelloman in a long while. And of course, we lost @Chad. I was fortunate enough to meet all those guys at Barnstock. Not sure where they all went.
It's funny, I never went away...I try to pop in from time to time and check in, but I've always felt like one of the less visible members, even when I was posting every day...

I'm not sure what happened here, but it seemed to change almost overnight...for me having @HelpImARock leave under questionable circumstances, and @GuitarHeel's divorce and loss of the farm were the events that kind of broke this place for me...

It's still the main music forum for me, but my guitar playing days are mostly behind me now...I was born with arthritis in my knee joints and it has been migrating north for my whole life...it made it to my hands a few years ago, and no amount of analgesics and heat therapy can make them work well enough to play anymore...I can play for about 10 or 15 minutes before they give up, and even then I have barely the dexterity to make it enjoyable...I knew these days were coming for years now...stay tuned for a pretty impressive gear sell-off, whenever I can motivate myself to get started on it...

I'm mainly focusing my creativity on my mixing studio...it's never going to be more than a hobby, but I enjoy it and I think I'm pretty good at it...I still work with David Vignola (Home Recording Made Easy) on his studio, but our shared YouTube channel (Mixing Music Analog) has basically gone dormant because we ran out of stuff to do...I also assist him with his new Mixing Academy...
I'm also working for Michael White (Mixing With Mike) as his live stream moderator every Wednesday evening and as his school forum moderator...

I'm actually surprised that @Mark Wein even bothers to keep this place active...he seems almost disengaged himself due to how much of his time his teaching and gigging careers take...I still throw him a Patreon donation every month, and I guess that's enough to keep it going...

Anyway, that's where I'm at...7 years to retirement, and still alone...

Good to hear from you, thanks for checking in! Sorry to hear the arthritis is progressing. I'm sure that's painful and limiting, and just sucks in general. Maybe time to take up slide?

Just for kicks I looked up airfares from Chicago to Austin. They are practically free, $215 round trip and there at least a dozen daily flights there from O’Hare and probably a dozen more out of Midway. Yee haw!

Austin is only a19 hour drive from here.

If i could come, I'd have to fly without any gear.
I've got us covered for any gear needs we would have, plenty of guitars amps pedals etc. Anyone is welcome to play any of my gear that they want, I'm not too precious about it. I have my music room and also I have the living room area which is larger and currently unoccupied that we could set up in.

So it looks like the fall might be the best time for the Austin one, either September or October, maybe early November before the holidays really start...

The first time I went to Austin I worked all day, went downtown with two guys I worked with, rented a car and drove straight through. The only time we stopped was for the restroom, coffee and for breakfast at a really weird buffet in
Waco, TX. It took us 20 hours through the ugliest parts of Illinois (the whole state), Missouri, Oklahoma and Texas.

Your drive is shorter and probably much more scenic. You can do it!

Waco, TX...the home of Dr. Pepper! If you're passing through Waco, a stop at the Dr. Pepper factory museum is worth a visit.

The only get-together I've been able to make it to was the one at Kauer Guitars, must have been 10 years ago. Met Randy, and Doug of course. Tried to meet up with Mark one time when we took a family trip to Disneyland but it never materialized.

Haha, good point. My wife was skeptical about me meeting a bunch of internet randos, but I returned with all my limbs in tact, so it was a win.
As we all get older things change. I enjoyed being part of a few of the Pragestock Jams and am thankful that @Prages and mrs p hosted those get togethers. Got a chance to meet other Weiners, had a great time and built some new friendships. If you ever get to attend 1, 2, or more. Make the attempt. After we all share a common bond with MWGL.

I could also add on the minor Weinstock get togthers at @Mark Wein's store as well as other minor get togethers such as NAMM, Kauerfest and Guitar show where I got to hang with @jaxn slim.

Yeah, @jaxn slim was there at Kauerfest too, huh! I just couldn't remember off the top of my head. Now I gotta dig up those pictures

I was there! Took a little digging to find the thread: https://markweinguitarlessons.com/forums/threads/the-premier-music-2013-halloween-hang.53589/

Hard to believe that was 13 years ago. :old:

Sorry I left you off @Punchy. It was so long ago.

LOL - I remember squeezing into the red rented camero. Damn the chopped top was tough to climb into.

Would totally be fun. Will be hard if not impossible for me to pull off. But would love such an opportunity. And yeah, it totally reminds me of the old Pragesstock’s I wanted to attend but didn’t.
