Y'all hear about this big Bourbon heist?

Your Worst Nightmare
It's been an interesting situation to watch unfold. Many of you are surely familiar with the famous Pappy Van Winkle Bourbon made by Buffalo Trace. It comes in a number of ages, most notably the 20-year and 23-year varieties. They both fetch upwards of $170-300 retail and 2-3 times that on the secondary market. Well, anyway, someone stole a shitload of it (65 cases) from the distillery. It was suspected to be an inside job.

And now they have a suspect. But this seems very fishy to me.

For one, what kind of dumb ass steals one of the most elite American liquors of all time and goes to a small town liquor store to sell it, while that small town's economy is 100% directly related to that same exact type of liquor. Buffalo Trace is in Frankfort, Kentucky. But he would have had to go from his hometown of Bardstown, where there are a dozen major distilleries, to Frankfurt, about an hour away. Then he'd have to go home to Bardstown, the Mecca of Bourbon whiskey, and try to sell his contraband? Seems like the person smart enough to pull off this heist would not be so careless about unloading it.
And why would he be so blatant about it? Walking into a liquor store with his work sweatshirt on and asking if they want to buy it? Surely you get a patsy to do it, or at least go in disguise of some kind.

Strange indeed.

Have you ever had any of the Pappy?
Yes, I've had all of them. I've still got a bottle of the 20-year at home, actually.
It's good. But as with most things, you hit diminishing marginal returns pretty hard as you get up to these kinds of prices.

Marketing.
They really don't need it though. As soon as there is a rumor that Pappy is hitting the shelves. People start chasing the distributors' trucks in droves. It's insane. With a required 20-year or 23-year lead time to predict demand, they won't get even close to catching up for more than a decade.

Shoulda' wore one of these

Never underestimate the stupidity of greedy people inclined to commit crime & steal from their employer

Seriously.

I worked for a large trucking company for quite a number of years. You would not believe the number of dock workers fired from jobs making $25.00 - $30.00 an hour for stealing a $150.00 piece of electronic equipment. And all the workers knew there were cameras all over the dock area for security reasons.
