Wildwood is still cool.

The Boy and I dropped by Wildwood this morning. It’s the first time I’ve been back since they moved—but they’re still less than 30 minutes from my home. They actually have fewer guitars on the wall—maybe two dozen—than at the old hole in the wall store. But they have lots of space in the form of private testing rooms with comfy furniture and high end amps to test with. There are over 2,000 guitars in stock and you can try any of them. If you know what you want to try you can even call ahead and they’ll pull them for you before you arrive. The location is out of the way, but it’s still not far from Denver or Boulder, so if you’re visiting it’s worth a trip.

We had a long talk with the guy working. Wildwood has been the biggest customer of the Gibson custom shop for the last 18 years and they have the trophy to prove it. Hilariously the trophy is a Les Paul headstock mounted on a little stand. They’re also the biggest customer of the Fender Custom shop. He opened up the web site and started digging through it to show me some of the cool stuff they’ve ordered from Gibson. Right now they have Wildwood spec 1957 Les Pauls in blue and red sparkle finishes. They’re also Gibson’s first and biggest buyer of custom pickups. They even have some custom P90s, which seems almost presumptuous given how many people already love the Gibson P90.

I didn’t buy any guitars—it’s been a whole week since the last one showed up! But I did get a nice strap for The Boy. It’s one of those “How the hell does something this nice turn a profit?” products.

No appoint necessary. Just show up and ring the bell. I doubt that they ever get busy. It’s tucked away in an office park in a part of town nobody goes to so they probably get zero random walk-ins.

The reason I asked is because their website shows “Open By Appointment Only.”
