Thats fine...you don't need to get into anything you're not going to enjoy...watching the Ken Burns documentary might be a good primer for (most) of the different eras and schools of Jazz and give you an idea of what is what. Even getting a few of these albums might not hurt to get started if you're not sure where to start with the small group style stuff:I guess I just don't like the really avant-garde stuff. Give me jazz standards
Yer shittin' me.You guys know there's actual jazz being made this century, right?
I like to watch jazz played live, because I enjoy watching the musicians display their musicianship and creativity in a live setting. However, I rarely listen to recorded jazz. It's just not my thing.
I rarely listen to studio jazz albums, preferring live performances and recordings for the musician's interplay and the crown jewel of jazz, improvisation.
Some styles definitely.I'll listen to the local college jazz station with my son in the car. He's 13.
He says it sounds like a bunch of guys playing their own songs at the same time.
There is a lot of truth in that.

Jazz tends to be elitist and exclusionary. Most people can't be bothered fighting that or trying to fit into it. I found the jazz guys in college so repulsive as humans that I wanted nothing to do with it. I could've had a better appreciation for it, I think, had they all not been such douchebags.
Every style of music has shitty fans.
I think that jazz is, by its nature, the most democratic musical style ever. You can't think of a style of music that jazz hasn't miscegenated with.
No, I don't mean fans so much as the jazz musicians themselves.

That is my experience with college age music students in general.
