When you get sick of fighting the zone board about your mailbox.

My neighbor had his mailbox smashed repeatedly this winter, so he built a very solid brick one. When the township said no, he erected this. He’s my new favorite neighbor.

I know a guy. Greg. Greg was tired of people smashing his mailbox, happens every winter. People don't stop, offer to pay to replace it. He wanted to build something very solid to cause some damage to their car but, apparently that was not legal. So he welded a pipe to a very large disc that just sits on the ground, not attached at all. Idea is when they hit it, and it falls over, the disc that is sitting horizontal on the ground will become vertical, hopefully under their car and take the radiator or something out.

what kinda place do you live in where you can't have a different mailbox? it looks like wide open farmland. Heck out here there are all kinds of mailboxes from brick to sculpture.

We can have any kind we want. The issue is were are on a county road and it’s 55 mph. You have to have a mailbox that will break away if it’s hit by a car. The brick one or something with a steel pole concreted into the ground could injure a driver that hits it.

Here's a novel idea: keep your vehicle on the fucking road, rednecks.

Here's why you have to have breakaway mailboxes:

My wife was driving down the highway with the kids in the back. Something flew off a truck in front of her and smashed the windshield of her vehicle. Between the surprise of something large flying at her face, and the almost complete loss of visibility of the now crushed windshield, she ran slightly off the road and clipped a mailbox before getting the vehicle to a stop.

Had the mailbox been the 4x4 set in concrete variety, things may have very likely turned out out much worse than they did.

There it is, end of thread.

Clueless person from a densily populated country gonna ask a dumb question here... Why exactly is the mailbox ON the 55m/h road and not on the driveway?

so the mailman never has to get out of his/her vehicle. pulls up next to box, deposits mail while reaching out, goes to next box.

It's across the street from the driveway. What @frunobulax said is correct. Mailboxes are on the road so the mailman can drive up next to it and drop off the mail. Since the houses are very far apart it would be terrible inefficient to walk. It also a very low traffic area. I be surprised if 50 cars a day drive by. There is nothing out here but homes or cornfields so, unless you live here there isn't any reason to be out here.

I understood the not wanting to get out part, that's pretty obvious. From a non-country boy perspective it just looks a lot safer for all involved if the mailman pulls a tiny bit into the driveway, drops off the mail and moves on again, so he doesn't have to stop in a 55m/h road as well. But yeah, if it's that calm, makes sense I guess.

It' really no big deal. I have a small lot at 8 acres, but most of the farmers have 500+ acres. It can take you a few minutes just to drive between houses. We are used to weird traffic stuff. In the spring and fall you have to watch for tractors on the road, you always have to watch for deer. Not to mention ATV's and snowmobiles. The mailman has a flashing light on their car and everyone just moves over to I've them space. I'm sure it's happened, but I don't recall a mailman ever getting hit by a car out here.
