Where you at? There aren't many public options here. I went to a state park lake yesterday but there were so many fishing boats I had to stop every 10 minutes or so to wait out the wakes. Don't have too much experience with that.

I really like seakayaking. Never learned to riverkayak. Unfortunately, the sitting position is now hard on my lower back and can create sciatica and IT band issues. SUPs work better for me on calm-ish water. Though I really prefer a nice sea kayak.

Download the launch sites app from paddling.net
It's great for finding near by places to kayak with some reviews. http://www.paddling.net/ check under the go paddling link on your pc for the launch map and trip reviews

Right on. Herons usually bolt too fast for me to get a good picture.

Nice. There's a lake right up the road from my house that's also a wildlife/bird sanctuary with tons of herons and cormorants. The herons will let you glide up to about 15 yards from them and they take off. I have lots of pictures of the under carriage of herons. One day I'm gonna get shat on.

The Mrs. and I have been thinking of picking up a couple kayaks. Looks like it'd be fun, and we've got a couple of nice rivers (Monocacy and Potomac) within minutes of our house. I have no idea what type to get though. So many choices...open or closed....long or short....wide or narrow. I see a closed cockpit (I guess it's called a cockpit) in @Lerxst's pics. Think I'd prefer that over the open. Other than that, not sure what to look for.
