Mojo Request Undertaking training for my commercial drone licence

jbj

Poor old Geordie's array...
Which I need to stay on the right side of the law as I'll be filming for commercial gain - i.e. to put videos on my DJ website.

I've spent the afternoon reading and watching the training materials the course sent out and my brain is about to explode. So many acronyms

Taking the course itself next Monday and Tuesday then hopefully passing the written exam and booking in my flight test for the end of next week :thu:

Excellent. Here I thought you could just go get a local drone from the local store and film for your own personal use as long as you aren't hurting others. Didn't realize you needed a license for putting video on your commercial website.

Kids today! When I was a wee little lad I had to peek through the neighbors fence to watch her nude sunbathe and skinny dip. Sometimes we would have to climb on the roof or tall tree in my back yard to get a good view.

Drones and cameras??? Kids are getting soft.

...or hard, as it were.

Good luck! Study hard. Have a steady hand etc...

Somewhat tangential, but a month ago at the solar eclipse, one guy in my group had a drone and got footage of the whole event from aloft. I was amazed at the clarity of the images, and how steady they were. Those things (and the cameras they carry) have come a long way.

If it's used for anything other than recreation you need this licence, same in the US.

Even though it's it's effectively a toy, it's being used in controlled airspace so falls under the jurisdiction of the Civil Aviation Authority here (FAA in the US) so you need this permission / like licence.

It's a criminal offence to do so otherwise and the police can and do prosecute.

Yeah mine can film never mind photo in 4k and it's only essentially an entry level 'good' drone.

Let me tell you something - I was given a drone for Christmas a couple years ago and on its first flight in a big open field something happened to make the drone lose contact with the radio. Darned thing ended up in a tree and I never saw it again because it just so happened to land in the tree owned by a really weird paranoid person who thought people were spying on him and I suspect he smashed it to bits when it fell out of the tree. Thing was about 150 feet up.
I still want a drone though, just not a cheap crappy one.

Apparently there's a 97% pass rate on the theory test so if I fail it tomorrow then...

According to my flight log I've had it up to 43mph but I've seen guys get it up to 60 with a headwind :embarrassed:

I had a drone. My 7 year old hit it out of the air with a baseball bat the first day. Little shit.

To be fair you shouldn't have had it within 50m of him so.... :embarrassed:

I've not had the thing for long at all but after going through this, I'm appalled at how little care or consideration I actually took when I was flying what is technically an aircraft and still subject to the same rules and regulations as a 747

98% on the theory test, the ex-Navy pilot who only got 96% was RAGING  :embarrassed:

Got my Operational Evaluation test on Thursday (weather permitting) so I need to plan a mock job (taking photos of a local sport facility) doing all the relevant paperwork, checks briefings etc... then get it up and fly it about for a bit. There's 2 manouvers that are a bit trickier but all in it should be OK :thu:

Yeah so it's taken me around 90 minutes to plan everything for this. OK so I'm trying to impress the guy so went OTT but there's no fucking way I'm going to be doing this before every gig for what amounts to a few minutes in the air and 10-20 seconds of footage!
