On XP or earlier, a low level format may be on the menu of fun unless the drive is mechanically SOL. I haven't seen how W7 > reacts.
 
You usually see that message when you accidentally leave a USB flash drive (thumb drive) in a slot and the machine has the USB higher in the boot order, so it's trying to boot from the flash drive.

Pull the drive out and reboot, it will find the internal hard drive.
