They were a part of El Borrachito's big mic shootout and I guess some models did very well....they are either very good for the money or very...not. :embarrassed:
 
Mine sound very good, don't get me wrong. (MXL 993 SDC Pair). The problem is that they are complete shit build-wise.
 
Some are great bang-for-the-buck wise. The really cheap ones are crap.
In general, stay away from the plain silver ones and you are OK.
The V67n and the Revelation are pretty rad.
The cube is cool too, in sort of an all-on-nothing sort of way.

AT 4041s are pretty good for OH. For LDCs 4040s are a great deal.
One 4040 and one 4050 would be a good combo. The 4040 is basically a cardioid-only 4050, so with one of each you could do stereo overheads, xy, ms, etc, for less $$.
The best cheap kik/tom mic is a used ATM25. The ATM250 is OK, but not as good.
