The cops should have recognized this substance...

Florida man arrested; doughnut flakes test positive for meth.

Daniel Rushing probably won't be eating Krispy Kreme doughnuts in his car any more.

The Orlando Sentinel reports that the 64-year-old was arrested on drug charges when Orlando police officers spotted four tiny flakes of glaze on his floorboard and thought they were pieces of crystal methamphetamine.

Cpl. Shelby Riggs-Hopkins wrote in an arrest report that during a traffic stop on Dec. 11, she noticed the flakes on the floorboard. Two roadside drug tests were positive for the illegal substance and Rushing was arrested. But a state crime lab test cleared him several weeks later.

Rushing told the newspaper he has hired a lawyer because he was arrested "for no reason at all."

Orlando police said in a statement that the arrest was lawful.

how the hell do substances test positive in the roadside test and then negative at the state lab. sounds like the first tests were doctored to make the charge stick. some cops should be going to jail!!

dirty lab equipment, sloppy lab techs, some of each.

i'm pretty sure krispy kreme puts heroin in their glaze though.

Those little vials/packets cops put unknown suspected drug samples in and shake them to see a color change are simply Mayer's reagent. This reagent precipitates alkaloids. Although a lot of illegal drugs are alkaloids, not all alkaloids are illegal drugs, in fact, far from it. So, it is possible to have a shit ton of perfectly legal alkaloids in a sample that provides a false Mayer's reagent test. When samples go to the crime lab, they are analyzed by much more sensitive and definitive GC/MS analysis.

well then, the cops need to get a better road side test. locking people up for 10 hours over sugar glaze is unacceptable bullshit.

if it was science (at least good science) they would have known if was NOT meth, and let the old man go.

I don't get how things even got to that point. How did they notice a couple white flakes on the floor of his car? Maybe he was acting erratically or something, but the blurb doesn't say.

Since I'll be in Orlando next week, this is important information. Lemme see if I've got this . . . don't eat any donuts in Orlando, right?
