SPOILERS!! The Walking Dead Season 7 Official Thread SPOILERS!!

The guy playing Negan is spectacular- it's an over-the-top character, and he's completely believable.

The Glenn killing was almost cartoonish (see what I did there?). When Negan said "dude, I HIT YOU SO HARD YOUR EYEBALL IS HANGING OUT" to call attention to the effect, the show jumped the gore shark. You just know that at some meeting, the producers are now saying "OK, we showed Glenn's eyeball hanging out, how are we gonna top THAT?"

And yeah, Rick's an idiot. Picking a fight with the Saviors before he knew anything about how powerful they were was dumb (it was almost funny how they wiped out that outpost and thought they'd killed off the whole group), but threatening Negan after he'd quite clearly established who had the upper hand was almost insane in its stupidity.

However, equally stupid is Negan's questionable policy of murdering a member of every group the Saviors takes in. I suppose his theory is leadership by intimidation, but that's only going to get you so far when everyone in your group has a reason to hate you. I'm imagining this will be Negan's eventual undoing.

I've been a fan since the beginning and have read the "graphic novel" also. All of this has been expected. One difference is how Abraham died. He died differently in the comix and Kirkman has said that he didn't care for the way he killed him so he gave him a more defiant death on TV.

Is the show going to take an interesting turn (i haven't read the comics)? Or is it just the same cycle of one group of people vs another group with walkers popping out of the bushes as needed?

that's pretty much been the formula for a while. Which is why I think Fear of the walking Dead has more potential now because they are on the road it seems. i always like the Walking Dead best when they were traveling around.

For those who've read the comics.....

How far in the future since the outbreak is the current season taking place because the people encountered seem to have deteriorated quickly, lost any and all morals very quickly if this is only like two or three years since the outbreak.

also if it's that far (2 or 3 years) down the road then how is it possible to still be driving automobiles? gas will go bad if unused within about 6 months here in the dry desert for sure in a year it will be completely bad and unusable. I'm sure in a high humidity place it would be even quicker.

I like Jeffrey Dean Morgan, but frankly there is no way that his Negan would have been able to assemble any significant group. He's prone to lengthy, windy speechifying, spectacularly inappropriate emotional reactions and equally spectacular fits of violence. I just don't know that he is believable -- a leader is supposed to possess some amount of charisma, which he seems to singularly lack...

I'd advise you to take a look at this:

Him and his gang show up to Alexandria, that seemed to be a peaceful community that was self-sufficient. Rick get's involved - starts negotiating on their behalf and picks a fight with another community, on behalf of another community and gets to of his people killed in the process.

Rick - you are stupid.

They were out of food. They agreed to wipe out Negan's headquarters (oops) in exchange for a one-time payment of half of Hilltop's stores.

Innumerable historical precedents exist. Negan already has his muscle, which he doesn't need to expend if he sufficiently cows his suppliers. What is dumb is trying to pull that on Rick's group. They've already wiped out about 40 of his hands, and he doesn't need Rick to take Alexandria. Hell, if he wants to use Rick's leadership to keep Alexandria at heel, he'd keep Coral as the hostage, not Darryl. I guess he just lies mayhem too much to take the easiest route? Otherwise, bat the lot of them, and dump the mess ate Alexandria's front gates.

Actually, I watched "The Talking Dead" from Sunday last night on demand (it's on way too late for me here to watch real-time), and feel a lot better now. It really was rather cathartic.

I'm still in it. I feel that last night's episode shook things up in a way that needed to happen to keep the show from getting stagnant. At this point, the walkers are almost a non-threat - they're easy for the survivors to handle. So a real threat was needed to ratchet the tension back up, and I believe they've delivered that in Negan, and I think Jeffrey Dean Morgan's performance is beyond stellar. It's interesting, some of you here (and to whom I've spoken elsewhere) are saying you might bail on the show in the aftermath of that episode - it's the opposite for me, I think they saved the show by being willing to deliver that punch. It hurt, it was brutally violent, and it sucks - but it reminds the viewer that no one is safe in that world.

This.

One of the more realistic episodes in a lot of ways, as far as these things go

Plenty of stupidity to go around of course.

I keep thinking, when watching Negal scenes, that Izzy from Grey's Anatomy is going to show up and flirt with him.
Denny Duquette! It's all I can think of when I see him. Or, at least, it was.

I thought that scene was disturbing and over-the-top in a torture porn sense, but from what I understand, this is a catalyst for the growth of Maggie's character down the road. I'll keep watching, but I did have a tough time getting to sleep.

Also, as some Barn Stormers may remember, totally called Abraham.

Yeah, the "sick guy" flirter eyes were very disturbing as he gave his wry smile while bashing in heads. You could almost see Izzy clapping her hands and yelling "Yay!" as he swung around his baseball bat talking to Rick's crew. Yuck.

I'll give additional episodes a chance since the intensity of this one isn't likely to be repeated until the obligatory season finale cliff hanger.

I really hope not, Maggie and what's his face (Ricks kid) both have long been my least favorites of the show. Maggie especially.
