I actually support your idea of plugging in direct...

Were it me, I would get a Tech21 "Blonde" expression pedal and a reverb pedal...the Tech21 is an amp simulator in a pedal, voiced like an old Fender amp...throw in a reverb pedal, and maybe a compressor, and you're off and running...if you opt to go that way we can walk you through setting up a pedal board...

it's a separate reverb control, so just turn that all the way to the left.

I was thinking about the outdoor gig I had. I don't know that the amp would have been powerful enough. For my usual small club/coffeehouse gigs, the amp power should be fine.

I guess what I want to know are what effects would add some presence and sustain to the guitar?

EQ and a Compressor. Joyo makes some inexpensive but very respectable pedals. Look for them on ebay. Lots of them for under $40 new.
