In general, should live music shows at local bars start earlier?

Agreed that it's not the only problem facing live music these days, but it wouldn't hurt. I'd consider going to a lot more shows if they started and ended at a reasonable hour.

Yeah...I'd be fine with them starting before 9:30. But, still, if I'm into it, I'll stay out til 1am on a school night.

Obviously I can only give you my opinion

Back in the day live music mostly happened Thurs-Fri-Sat..
People were prepared to pay the price of showing up to work at their menial jobs on Friday all hung over because if they,(we), lost our jobs, we'd get another the next week..

When I found my *forever* job and I've gone\go to see a show during the week...I only see big shows....The people who are attending know far ahead of time and take the next day or two off....

Let the headliner begin as late as they want.........

absolutely earlier.

the notion that bands don't start until 10 pm and go until 2 am is fucking stupid. there is NO statistical reason to show it's a good idea.
especially if the band is playing to folks over 35 or 40. NO ONE in that age bracket starts to go out at 10.

and then there's how fucked up that schedule is on the bar staff. these poor people have families too. and after everything is cleaned up, restocked and the place is closed and they go home, it's fucking 3 am.

bands should start at 8 pm and play till midnight. PERIOD.

maybe later for the 20 something crowd that want to rave all night.

Seems I'm in the minority...No surprise......

I'm a night owl but am forced not to be because of work..

3 more years left to retirement.....Yahoo.........

Have you ever tried to herd a group of rock musicians onstage before 10pm? Good luck with THAT.

In the UK the standard hours for a live show are 9-11PM. Comes from the old licensing hours when pubs shut at 11. After that it's time for a club if you want to keep going.

I never realized American bands probably bitch about having to go on so early when they tour

I'd like to see shows in theatres, arenas, and any of the larger venues like casinos start and end earlier too.

Casinos aren't too bad for that, at least around here.

My thought is that the end time is the problem. I don't usually get done with work until 6pm or shortly after. By the time I get home, eat and shower a 7pm start is too early for me. That said I don't usually make late night plans for a weeknight event.

That's what they do here 8 or 9pm start until Midnight and it works. We were up north earlier in the year and the music started at half 10 / 11. We didn't bother hanging around to see anything because if its rubbish - you've waited to hear rubbish and if its good, were not staying out until 2am so you only see half the show.

Yes, shows should start earlier, especially in light of the shift from wild rock 'n roll lifestyles to every action of almost every artist/band being managed and calculated. If they can be awake at 7am to do a 9am promo appearance on local radio/tv, they can start their show promptly and be more efficient with change overs for multi-act shows.

The need for build and anticipation is now longer necessary, even more so when you consider the cost of bigger shows. And local or regional acts should do a better job of catering to their audiences. The bands can still party like crazy afterwards, they can just start earlier. Right?

Fairly standard around here, if you're seeing a three band bill...

Doors 800
Local opener 830
Touring opener 915
Headliner 1015-1030

Works for me.
