Russian Muff is Back

They've been making a Green Russian Muff for years. They just called it the Bass Big Muff.

I wonder what the difference is?

Ok, here's the difference. This post is from mannysilvers, at Talkbass. He's an engineer for EHX.

The Bass Big Muffs are actually more similar to the vintage Black Russian Big Muffs than the Green Russians (despite the green packaging).

I've spent a decent amount of time comparing this new Green Russian Muff to the Bass Big Muff. The Green Russian I'd say is more aggressive and heavy than the Bass Big Muff. Bass Big Muff is a bit smoother. The Green Russian doesn't have the blend switch (knob on the Deluxe Bass Big Muff) but I find it doesn't really need it. The Green Russian is very punchy, even without a dry blend.

I actually am replacing the Deluxe Bass Big Muff on my personal board with one of these. I highly recommend trying one out.

The Bass Big Muff is based off a Black Russian Big Muff. (I know it's confusing with the green color scheme.) I would say the Green Russian is a bit more aggressive and punchier, especially on bass.

The main Big Muff I based this on is a Tall Font version. However, it was compared to a Bubble Font Green Russian (pictured) and it sounded better. There are variations in sound even within the different eras of Green Russian Big Muff.

What are you guys using instead of the 2N5089 transistors? Or do I have to wait for someone to open one up :(

I am sorry guys, but the thread title made this pop into my tiny little mind.

<-- I love muffs. I have a green Russian too. I mostly use the EQD Hoof for live stuff though, as it cuts through a full band mix a little better than my vintage muffs. It's supposedly based on a green Russian. I've never actually tried them side-by-side. Maybe one of these days I'll do a shoot out and record it.

Those commercials lied to us! Russian women are hotter than ours :(
Yup. In the early '90s we had a bunch of Russian girls come over for the Summer and work as cocktail waitresses in the casinos.

It was a flood of tall blonde supermodels.

Not a turnip or bushel of beets in sight.

Very funny, goofy and down to earth lady.

This thread, and all the other threads about the Russian Muff on teh interwebz are giving me GAS. The problem is, my setup is the worst for muffs. I prefer blackface and silverface Fender (and Fender inspired) amps. These amps have a beautiful clean with a scooped midrange, which is why they respond very well to midrange heavy pedals. But the Big Muff also has a scooped midrange. So you end up with this buzzy, nasty sounding distortion that disappears in a band mix. IMO, the pedal with the right midrange content that distorts hard enough is the ProCo RAT.

I have two RATs, the PaltheGiraffe/@RyanNo3 Alligator Chef and the MXR Bass Distortion (which is a Fuzzrocious modded RAT with a clean blend). So I hooked both of them up, maxed the distortion on each, and played in sonic fields of cascading feedback for 15 minutes. No more Muff GAS.

...and then the neighbors called the cops...:embarrassed:

I just snagged a Chicago Stompworks green Russian muff. Cheaper than the EHX and will sound better. I had their violet rams head a year or so ago. Probably the best muff type pedal I've ever played.
