I owned one of these once, and it was a neat beginners/check out a new instrument type of thing. Seeing that it includes the case, not a bad deal at all.

Even for a beginner, I'd really emphasize the importance of a solid top, unless they honestly couldn't afford it. And that's true of pretty much any acoustic string instrument.

I spent some time at GC one afternoon trying out all the inexpensive mandolins.

there was a REAL quality difference from instrument to instrument, even from the same manufacturer.

I'd never buy one, even this cheap, without playing it.
