Rigs of Krashpad

You ever gig the Custom?

Not the Kustom head, not any more. Back in the day it was my only gigging amp, during the '80's through the early '90's.

For a short time, before I had a bass amp, I even gigged it for bass. Carefully, of course.

In the early '90's I got a '67 Super Reverb and more or less retired the Kustom. On one occasion thereafter, I did gig both of them together for an outdoor show (see stage right below), for a little more carry. That was more or less in self-defense, though, because our other guitarist was gigging a 100W Marshall JCM 2000 with 2 cabs for that show (he usually just gigged a halfstack).

The Kustom head still works, but being an early solid state is a little tinny and harsh, to my hearing anyhow. Also, the input jack on it is a little screwy, and to use it one has to jerry rig some additional pressure on the guitar cable (which can be easily done with a rubber band, but it looks a little silly) to keep it from popping back out and disconnecting. So there's that too. And on rare occasions, those early Kustom heads will pick up a radio transmission, which is a less than optimal outcome as well.

As the photos posted earlier show, I do still gig the 1x15 cab though. Either with the Sovtek MiG 50H head or the Sunn 200S. It has the original J.B. Lansing fifteen in it, and is the absolute tits.
