Reverb WTF of the day

If it were like $550 I'd buy it, have it checked out for stability (and fixed if necessary), and play it.
 
By jove, you're right -- that would only improve it by about 100%! I still maintain that I doubt this was originally a natural-finish.

I assume the same. Aren't natural or see-through finishes generally on bookmatched tops, not three piece?

No, most Norlin-era Les Pauls used 3-piece tops regardless of model or finish. They did make Natural-topped Deluxes, Standards and Customs with 3-piece tops, but those came in the mid' to late'70's when they also used 3-piece maple necks for all their Les Pauls.

This model is a pre-'74 Deluxe, we can tell from the 3-piece mahogany neck. For that time period, with a mahogany-stained back, it would have been Goldtop, Blue Sparkle Top or Red Sparkle Top; the only other color from the era is the Sunburst and that used a Sunbusrt back and Sunburst neck as well.
