Remember when screensavers were a thing?

For a while there, it seemed like everyone had some animated desktop screensaver. I remember this one being very popular.

Nowadays, it seems computers just fade to black.

You could animate that and do it like the intro to Star Wars (yes, I know enough of Star Wars to know the whole "A long time ago in a galaxy far, far away" thing.)

James Hetfield wrote "Fade To Black" after all their gear was stolen. He was really bummed about one amp in particular.

I still have it on my 'puter'.. It comes on after 30 mins of non use..It's family pictures......

The apocryphal wisdom of the 90s was that turning electronics off and on wasted energy and caused them to break down. It was common for businesses to have official policies of leaving all computers and monitors on 24/7. Some especially foolish people would even leave storage closets lit all the time because fluorescent lights were rumored to use huge amounts of electricity when they flickered to life. Eventually the MBAs figured out this was all bullshit and started turning stuff off.

Interesting, I just saw an article about screensavers. Seems "After Dark," well known to Mac users in the 90s, can still be run if you know where to get it. Remember the flying toasters?

After Dark had the aquarium too, I'm pretty sure, along with the flying toasters and several others. Those two were the most popular of the collection.

Another one that I remember being popular later in the 90's was the SETI application. It would supposedly scan the spectrum for alien transmissions.

We've still got a few nuts around here who have some silly wav file go off when something hits their inbox, like a toilet flushing or an airplane flying by. It was cool in 1995. Now it's annoying as hell.

Yep, in the mid 90's "Multimedia" was all the rage for PC's.

I had a boss about 10 years ago that still had long WAV files for every occasion. The worst was the George Carlin "There's a letter in your mailbox" WAV for every fucking incoming email.

Yep - still running that one. I've got something like 20 million workunits cranked out. Someday...
