Unholy Meat Obelisk
Am starting a new project refinishing this and giving it a makeover

I previously stripped of all the laquer and finished it, but it's been heavily used so the finish is heavily scratched and dented and some of the finish has flaked off.

I have already disassembled it completely and going to do the following:

- sand down the body
- sand down the neck including headstock
- stain the body and neck with water based trans-black finish and finish with tru-oil
- darken the fretboard to ebony
- smooth and round the heel
- for some nice detail I am going to faux-bind the body and headstock (leaving the natural wood).
- redress the frets or do a complete re-fret job
- replace the cheap tuners with black Schallers or Sperzels.

pictures to follow, Will start sanding the coming week. Wish me luck. oh, and hints and tips always welcome! :thu:

"- darken the fretboard to ebony"

Only tip I can give, don't even bother with painter's tape, the dye will seep right through it. Use a Q tip, and put it only where you want it.

What would be the best HAND tool to get the volume know hole countersunk like that?

How big does the countersink need to be? Found a set of 6mm to 19mm bits on Amazon here.

Alternatively, there's a load of specialist countersinks on RS Components website.

thanks,

it's actually for tuner holes like here:

In that case your normal wood bits like these would do. Just drill the normal hole and then use one of these at the appropriate size to get the counter sink. I'd use a cordless drill which can be set to low power so it doesn't chew through too quick, or even use a hand drill.

Tiem to get sanding his week. Will post update pictures soon

So I started sanding the headstock and the nexk. Using c0nsecutively 40, 80 and 120 grit sandpaper I got all the lacquer off and the surface very smooth. I may do one more sanding session with even finer paper.

Here's some pics

That should look great.

Before you try the counter sink thing, make sure the top is thick enough to handle it. Most flat tops aren't.

I think I've seen sanding balls that fit into drill Chucks, but I can't remember for sure.

Still, with a flat top, chances are that you only have 1/4" or less of wood to work with on the control cavity. I wouldn't recommend trying to counter sink it.

Yeah, I wasn't going to do that on the body. If you look closely at the pics above I did do some countersinking on the tuner holes. Just because I like the look of it.

Reading comprehension isn't my strong suit. :embarrassed:
