nice site and forums Mark..

R. Chapman
(from Harmony Central)..

Very cool! Both you guys have put in really good takes!

I'm glad you like our "infant" forum....I originally put it up just to make hosting the contest easier but people seem to be enjoying it...hopefully we'll have a nice little community here!

Alright...

I took another shot...and this time I TRIED to play outside my comfort zone of the Blues/Pentatonic boxes. As you'll hear I fell right back into them. Cliched fast lick near the end and all.

I'm finding playing to this backing track very useful in that I'm forcing myself to try different things. I guess I really need to listen to something besides classic rock to help get it into my head.

Mark, I'm a huge Zeppelin fan (I guess most are..) Didn't Page play alot of things out of the ordinary as far as scales?? I love his playing...Bluesy...but always something different too.. Anyway..here's my other track.. I'm going about this now as an educational thing. Also, ignore the flub near the 24 second mark...Whoops!!! :P

Much stronger and more interesting performance on this one!

Page was originally very blues based but he always had a habit of bringing in interesting notes that related more to the chord he was playing over than the pentatonic scale. The first example that comes to mind are the places that he plays an "f" note in the Stairway to Heaven solo. You could look at that like he is playing A Natural Minor but he only does that over the F Major chord in the progression and the rest of the time he is playing the minor pentatonic scale...

I'm glad you are digging the site. I am trying to keep the forum interesting and to add useful content everyday...the internet is littered with forums like this that never got off the ground because the person running them never did much to keep people interested in coming back. If you have any suggestions please feel free to post them!

Hey Mark!, I've had another go as well, I tried something a bit more "rock" this time whilst still keeping it Dorian..I think..

I really like Randy's take on it, quite different to mine I think...good to see the different approaches that can be taken to this type of chord change..

Excellent site, keep up the good work!

Mo

Cool! I like that you guys are checking each other out, too...you never know what ideas someone else's take will spark for you!

Hi Mark,

Here's my entry...

Thanks, now I can go and listen to the rest. 8)

I doubled the length...

Great playing and really good sound. How did you record the guitar?

Hey Mow, That's just a VOX AD100VTH set to the factory ac15 preset direct out to a Lexicon Omega interface into Cubase. Recorded dry, added some compression and reverb. The guitar was a PRS Santana SE, neck pickup. I don't really care for the amp and I only keep it around to record direct. I don't even use a cab with it, just headphones out of the interface. Thanks for the kind words 8) Yours also sounds great. Everybody, keep up the good work.

Great stuff guys!

Tomorrow morning I'll have polls up for the voting to start....is this something you'd like to see be a regular feature? I was thinking of having a "Blues" one next....

I'd love to play more solos

It would certainly improve my playing and help me to use the scales better.

A blues one would be great because I realy enjoy playing a blues solo :)

Cool!

For a while there were a bunch of BT posts on Harmony Central and just having to cut a take that didn't suck in styles I wasn't comfortable in really made me stretch...it was great for my playing...I really think I''m going to make this a monthly deal...
