New Amp Day - Classic 30

shoeless

Riffin'
I've heard a lot of good things about Classic 30s and have always wanted to try one. So when one popped up on my local CL for cheap, I couldn't resist. The story of how I got this amp here: http://markweinguitarlessons.com/forums/threads/peavey-classic-30-opinions.75890/

Had a lot of fun messing with it last night. Sounded great with a strat plugged directly in, just using the drive controls on the dirty channel. Definitely a keeper. Looking forward to taking it to our weekly jam night next week.

Here are some pics. The only cosmetic flaws I've seen are a little scratch on the Classic 30 front label and some paint on one of the rear corner protectors. Pretty sure the paint will come off easily. I think he must have bumped into a wall with it at some point.

Anybody care to venture a guess as to the year of this amp?

As I said in the other thread, congrats! That is an unreal score. If you end up not liking it, I believe you can more than double your money easily selling it. But I bet you end up liking it.

And yes, that is identical to mine. (except one thing, I do not see "Blue Marvel" on the back of the speaker. See example pic on this page. http://guitargas.com/117/peavey-classic-30-peaveys-classic-tweed-workhorse/ I wonder if your seller replaced the speaker on yours.) If you told me those were pics of mine (other than no Blue Marvel sticker), I wouldn't doubt it. I got mine in 2006 used and don't know for sure when it was made. Somewhere around the turn of the century, I think just after. But I never bothered figuring it out. Congrats again! I hope you like it.

First, I do like it quite a bit, based on the hour or so I spent with it last night.

I was wondering about the speaker too. The impression I got from the owner was that he's not really the tinkering type. I kind of doubt he replaced the speaker. Did Peavey ever make these with a generic black speaker? I don't see any label of any kind on it.

Not that I am aware. I will look at mine when I get to the office, but I believe it is just a sticker on the magnet so the sticker could have been pulled off. If you like the sound, I wouldn't worry about it. I will look at my serial number also so I can see what era mine is from.

EDIT: Also, mine has sat pretty idle the last few years, at work where I play it at low volume once in a while if I have time and no one is around. Maybe someone else using theirs more often @Prages , @micwalt ) might chime in with some thoughts on speakers, etc.

HNAD and welcome to the club.
It's got to be a mid-'90s model since it doesn't have the little curve at the top of the grille.
Looks just like mine, which I got in '95. Put a Hellatone speaker in it maybe 8 years ago. Love that amp! I usually play with a Boss GT-8 in front of it for all my sounds, but I plugged straight in with a Charvel So Cal the other day. Sounded fantastic all by itself.
Nice score!

HNGD! It's in great condition for a 1994. I had a dual speaker Classic 50 that I unloaded this past year due to it's weight. At the age of 60, and having nursed a back issue for many years, whenever I had to move it, I ended up in the chiropractor's office. I sure like that the tubes are easily accessable.

BTW -- haven't played one myself, but I recall reading that the tube cage on the new ones is useful, because it prevents potential damage to the tubes, which are rather exposed on yours. Don't know if you can get one aftermarket that will fit, but understand there is something called a "tube tamer" or some such thing available on Ebay that can help prevent such damage.

Yep. I have links to the Tube Tamer, and also the guard you can put on, in his other thread.
